Donald Walker took a surprisingly modern approach to self-defense in his "Defensive Exercises". His system was a mixed martial art of sorts, blending Cornwall/Devon wrestling, Cumberland/Westmoreland wrestling, early boxing, Irish stickfighting, English stickfighting, and a bit of standing grappling.
