These two have a combined age of 90. They are both shot to pieces as fighters. Toney is a very sad case and will be lucky to be able to limp once Shamrock is through with him.
I believe that Dana White's whole motivation for putting on the farce that was Couture v. Toney was to embarrass boxing, his competition. He didn't really want to put on a competitive fight. I would LOVE to see an MMA guy fight a real boxer in a BOXING MATCH. I'm interested to see what is going to happen when Nick Diaz and Jeff Lacy fight. I would have much rather seen Diaz box a boxer that still has a pulse though. Lacy is washed up... why not someone like Sakio Bika or Allan Green? I suspect it is because Diaz and any other MMA fighter would be embarrased and destroyed by a real boxer who is not dead.
I was there live at UFC when Toney fought and he embarass everyone esp. himself. You guys should have heard the intro for Toney they lie and lie. They introduce him as one of the current heavyweight champs fighting in his lightest weight He underestimated the takedown/floor game and Randy. Randy knows what would happen in the rematch though, rejecting the offer provided, but still Toney is embarrasing the sport of boxing.
Toney said it wasnt his idea, but he is not going to argue and happy because they will be able to fight real combat.
Randy knows what would happen in the rematch? Surely you don't think Toney could turn it around against Randy?
this cant hurt boxing and cant help mma. no-win for mma actually, and no risk for boxing. shamrock win- he beat up an old, washed-up former boxer with no wrestling or ground fighting talent using his rules. toney win- even a washed up boxer with no ground game can beat an mma legend. not a good fight for fans of mma
What I would like to see is a rematch of Couture v. Toney - in a boxing match. Why not? Toney went into his arena, why can't Couture do the same? I think it would be gentlemanly thing of Couture to do. Of course, Toney would embarrass Couture just as badly as Couture embarrased him in the octagon...
No, the Gentlemanly thing to do is not to go to the head of the UFC and talk about 'knocking these ***** asses out' like James did because he couldnt get a payday in boxing then have Gary Shaw trying to earn a dollar by calling Couture a coward for not accepting a return match when he had no interest in boxing whilst having the utmost respect and knowing his limitations
