Ali has the best. Holy has a great resume. Lewis has a great resume. Foreman has an amazing one as well.
Yep. One must also factor-in the times. Anytime he fought a white guy, the ref & judges would be against him. Ring sizes, gloves weights, etc, would often be skewed in his opponents favor. - And those guys sometimes fought 20-30 rounds! Pretty significant considering that at age FORTY EIGHT he still had a record of 61-6, with a handful of N/C's. (and a few of the 6 losses were blatantly bad decisions.) Plus, the guy fought often, and he fought everyone. He was also impressive outside the ring. Six kids, which he raised & personally taught to read. Three WHITE wives (in America in the early 1900's) Outspoken on racial issues at a time it could get you lynched. Also he was evidently well-spoken & a gentleman with the press. Beat that, Muhammad.
Ali, Louis, Lewis, Holyfield and Foreman all have fantastic resumes. Ali is the definite standout though.
I give it to Joe Louis, but just slightly over Ali. Those bums of the month were generally rated contenders that Louis just blew out that badly, so people don't give it the just due it deserves. And look how tough he was matched early on....just incredible. Those two guys, a strong argument can be made for and I wouldn't begrudge anyone who fell on either side of it. Ali is the only one I can think of who didn't really miss any names, whereas there is a case that can be made that Louis didn't fight some of his top black contenders. Flip a coin between Louis and Ali, and there's no wrong answer.
