Why hasn't Sergio Martinez been targeting Bute?

But their excuse is a legit one. Them holding a title once upon a time at that weight means very little if they themselves admit they don't belong there, and they only fought a cherry-picked fight for a title/payday. It's not like they are claiming to be the top dogs of 154, for them to have to back that claim up. They have no business there. It's as simple as that.

The fans only hold a grudge against Martinez because he's criticizing them [Pac and Floyd] for not doing something which he himself is not willing to do either.

Completely agree! He should fight Sturm who packed 18000 people in a stadium a few hours ago. Sturm also said he wants to fight in the US. It's th most logical fight right now for Martinez.

I wish Bute and Martinez would fight. I think it would be a hell of a fight and at 168, I don't know who I would pick as a winner. Hopefully it will get made in the next year.

Bute would stop him. Thats the reason he want no parts of Bute. The guy is bigger than him and skilled.

... maybe cause Bute is a Super-Middle, and he just barely won the Middle-Weight title... :? Why not move up, gradually, or at least try to unify first?

Taylor, Miranda, Abraham, and Pavlik all normally weighed around 170 at fight time. They were all considered huge middleweights. Martinez weighs around 170 on fight night, and yet, ESB posters continue to claim Martinez is a small middleweight. The hypocrisy on ESB knows no boundaries!

Tommy Hearns started at 147 and won legitimate world titles all the way to 175. That's 5 divisions.

Shane Mosely won his first world title at 135, and won legit world titles all the way to 154. That's 4 divisions.

Oscar won his first world titla at 130 and held world titles all the way to 154. That's 5 divisions.

Floyd won his first title at 130 and won world titles all the way to 154; 5 divisions.

Duran beat Buchanan at 135 and won world titles as high as 160.

Alexis Arguello started at 126 and ruled 3 divisions with an iron fist back when there were only two titles.

Arturo Gatti was a solid two division world champion. That's more than we can say for Martinez.

Martinez won the vacant WBC interim title at 154 in a fight with a shot to **** Alex Bunema. Right after Vernon Forest was murdered the WBC gifted Martinez with Vernon's title. Martinez has never won or defended a legit world title at 154.

Martinez ultimately fought Kelly Pavlik who discharged from his first stay at Betty Ford just 10 days before the fight, and damn near killed himself making 160. Martinez won the WBO and WBC titles. The WBO stripped Martinez because he refused to make a commitment to stay at 160 and make a defense. The WBC correctly stripped Martinez for refusing to fight his mandatory.

As I demonstrated above, great fighters can move up through multiple divisions and do extremely well. Martinez cannot do that because he is not a great fighter. He briefly held legit world titles in one division, but was rightly stripped for refusing to play by the rules. Those are the only legit world titles he will ever hold uness he chooses a soft and easy route by fighting Chavez jr.

You forgot to mention the fact that Martinez became the mandatory in 2007 and watied close to 2 years to fight Forrest. You also clearly forgot to mention him calling out Forrest and absolutely everyone around the division before getting the Williams fight.

What a hero. You forgot to mention the fact that Martinez was giving up 11 pounds to Pavlik.
No the WBO stripped Martinez because he wasn't Kelly Pavlik or Danny Jacobs. Notice how flexible they are in applying that rule with other names, such Pacquiao, who won a belt at 154 (Martinez's, BTW) whilst holding the WBO welterweight strap.

You did not demonstrate ****. Different fighters pave their own paths, and this idea that moving up is always required to demonstrate greatness is shockingly shortsighted and absolute rubbish. Was Hagler not great in your book?

Martinez only wants to fight smaller guys, and/or guys who have serious problems. Mark my words: Sergio Martinez will never fight a prime, focused and determined fighter his own size. He is a fraud.

It depends what Martinez wants to accomplish at this point. Is he only looking for an immediate pay day ? Then Mayweather or Pacquiao it is and explains his constant comments about them...

If Martinez stays in the top 5 P4P rankings by beating the best at 160lbs and then looks for an incredible legacy fight with a very decent financial reward, then he could fight the winner of Bute vs Ward, as long as Ward is the winner of the S6 and decides to unify with Bute afterwards.

That scenario would make it a HUGE enough fight for fans everywhere !
