Burns on film has far better skill, and was bigger. Burns to me also had an under rated chin in a pound for pound type of sense. I would say he would defeat Ketchel, who looks very poor in his two filmed fights.
Based on film you would certainly conclude that, but their records suggest that film might not tell the whole story.
Which flims? For operners Burns ( who was ill and asked for the fight to be postponed ) was more competitive with Jack Johnson than Ketchel was. Burns looks very good in a KO over over Squires. His win over O'Brien shows better footwork than Ketchel had by a long margin. Skill wise its Burns for me by a good margin.
I have just said that Burns looks better on film. My point is that the film is contradicted by their results vs common opponents.

This very nearly happened. Burns was set for it and the sporting press were ready to swallow it - Papke killed it for them though. I think Ketchel would have won. Flat out better. Did better against common opponents.

Mendoza/McVey Many, many years ago, on this very site I read a lenghthy article written by Tommy Burns and posted in a newspaper. (i think it might have even been before the site crashed once). This article was part of a series and while it covered in great detail his early fights, i am sure that it would have at some stage went on to cover the Johnson fight. Obviously, these things are never definitive, but often they do dispel some myths and strengthen others. I think it would make incredibly interesting reading, that entire series. This is an off chance, but do either of you, or anyone else have a link to one or all of that series of articles written by tommy Burns?
I think Burns was much better and would have taken him out ... I know Ketchel was a fearless, merciless brawler but I see little skill in the films .. a very fast, sharp and powerful hitting Burns would clean his clock.
