Lou Stillman wouldn't allow those nailed-down windows to be pried open because fresh air would've ruined everything. What do too many of these so-called gym have today...? Not only fresh air, but cleanliness. Some of them even have air-conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter! It's despicable. --Add to that "no-contact sparring" and group boxing classes and you want to flee screaming down the avenue.
JG, the old school trainers didn't use pads not much or not at all? Wonder why the pads are so popular now and whn they became popular, considering they werent in the 40s and 50s. Guys like Arcel and Brown didnt use pads even with a later guy like Duran yet Roach who has a direct link with Futch and Arcel always uses the pads with Pacquaio...
When used correctly the pads can mimic the movement of a body. The guys who hold the pads way out to the sides are missing the point. The pads get the fighter, like the heavybag can do, to punch in combination and with accuracy. Roach is pretty good about holding the pads in the right place and getting the fighter to use the proper technique and footwork to deliver his shots. They also use defensive manuevers which a bag cant do to get the fighter to move his head or step to a certain position. They didnt use pads because noone thought to use them. They had bigger pads and side hung heavybags for uppercuts, but the pads can cover the full gament of punches.
There may've been trainers doing off-the-wall things out of a ROCKY movie, but never at Stillman's. They'd view pads as a floor show. Some top trainers now have confided privately that they go along with certain things to mollify their charges. They're young guys that like to see muscles in the mirror; or not be outdone by fighters doing eye-catching drills.
