Mayweather struggles against southpaws for a period though. He tends to square up against them and nullifies his own offense and defense in a way, it's not a coincidence that Corley hurt him. If he squares off against a guy like Pacquiao with the ability to punch with him, coupled with excellent footwork, it's going to be extremely tough for Mayweather IMO.

I made a massive post on Cotto-Foreman, that was literally about 5 paragraphs long, and I accidentally pressed escape. I. AM. FUMING.

I'm almost in pain from it. All about how Steward's slight adaptations have benefited him greatly, his cutting off of the ring, the timing off his left hook, blah blah bloody blah.:verysad

Been working a lot of overtime recently, so have been too knackered to do much except watch some fights. I've watched the following over the last week:

Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Rogers Mtagwa

Really enjoyable fight to watch. I thought Lopez won the first 6 rounds, but after that Mtagwa made quite a comeback. I thought Lopez could have utilised the jab better at times against Mtagwa, and I had expected Lopez to control the fight when the pace slowed down but thought Rogers did a better job from there on. Scored it 114-112 Lopez, but scored the last round a 2 point round to Mtawga as it was pretty much one-way traffic.

Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Rafael Marquez

I was really enjoying this and had Lopez up 75-77 prior to the fight ending. I wouldn't mind seeing a rematch at some point over the next year if Marquez can get a couple of wins under his belt. Failing that I'd like to see him avenge his brother's loss to Chris John.

    Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Rogers Mtagwa

Well...Gamboa just blew Mtagwa out of the water. I actually felt kind of sorry for Mtagwa. Obviously Gamboa's a different type of fighter than Lopez and Mtagwa wasn't going to be able to fight the same way, but I still felt bad to see him dismantled so easily.

Manny Pacquaio vs. Juan Manuel Marquez 1

I had Maruqez winning by a point - 112-113. I felt the better all-round boxing was coming from Marquez, and that Pac-Man seemed to struggle at times where Marquez was the aggressor.

Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Orlando Salido

This wasn't the most entertaining of fights, but I think Lederman was a bit harsh in calling Marquez's style a "dull, counter-punching" style. It was a scientific display of the erm...sweet science. And until the last few rounds Salido didn't really seem to attempt to win the fight. Had Marquez by 117-111.

Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Marco Antonio Barrera

A really fun fight that went back and forth on my scorecard. Barrera winning the first 4, and then they traded rounds thereafter. I scored the 7th as a 10-8 round in Marquez favour, and my score wound up 114-113 Marquez - had the knockdown in the 7th be counted as such my scorecard would have been different.

I was wondering how you guys seen the 7th? For me, Marquez was winning the round until the knockdown - personally, I would have scored it a 10-9 round to Barrera at that point. 10-8 for the knockdown, but then Marquez getting a point back for winning the round. Taking Barrera's point deduction into account, I'd have then scored it 9-9.

I'd then have had Barrera as the winner by a point, rather than losing by a point.

    and finally...

Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao 2

Emanuel Steward said repeatedly - well, at least a couple of times - that Marquez "could not out box" Pacquiao and "would have to fight him" in order to win. I felt the opposite - Marquez seemed to be able to frustrate Pacquiao at times by boxing better, but when they stood toe-to-toe Pacquiao at times was coming off better. As the bout wore on Marquez also had some success when it turned into a fight. Ultimately I scored it 114-113 Pacquiao.

Apparently Rafa's fighting Nishioka next. What do you make of that?

I think going back down to 122lbs might be for the best. Like I said, I'd love to see him fight Chris John - or Jhonny Gozales for that matter - at 126 but Nishioka is a great fight. He won't be facing a much younger or stronger opponent, and I think Marquez will be able to beat him.

The only danger I see is that it's a very tough fight to come into without a tuneup fight. I know Rafa and his camp won't be taking him lightly, as he (Nishioka) is the best super-bantam in the world for a reason.

I think he's got a tuneup on the same card as JMM's tuneup.

Jhonny Gonzalez is fighting on the Lara/Williams card. Horrible opponent - Tomas Villa. Guy got stopped in 1 by Mikey Garcia :-(

Yeah, think Rafa is on the JMM card as is Roman Gonzalez :happy

That the same Tomas Villa who had a FOTY contender with Mtagwa? Expect a brutal finish if so.

That sounds like a fun card! Don't know much about Juan Manuel's opponent, but was looking forward to Marquez vs. Diaz until the latter pulled out.

Daniel Ponce de Leon Vs. Adrien Broner

How on earth they gave Broner the decision is beyond me. The fact that on one card got the win by way of a 99-91 score is nothing short of heinous. Not exactly a shock that they gave it to him though, eh. I had it 97-94 to Ponce, six rounds to Ponce, three to Broner and one even.

Throughout the fight de Leon conducted the much better work, Broner did the 'ole Devon Alexander trick of essentially shouting every time he threw a punch. Through the sheer noise he made it made his work look all the more effective than it really was. He was cagey, landed very little, and got caught relatively often. Against a fighter who, it's worth noting, really shouldn't be fighting at super-feather, and is rightly moving back down.

Ponce's improvement is admirable, watch him up to and including Bautista and then watch him post-Juanma to see the true extent of the refinement he's made. He's no longer just a rush forward, try to land bombs-type fighter like he used to be. He's gone from being a poor boxer to a decent one, which is truely impressive IMO. He's no longer dropping loads of rounds because he's intent on imposing his power, he's much more effective now, and applies it(his power) better. He can implement it in more subtle ways, and his ring generalship and shot selection have been significantly enhanced. Notice the way that, when Broner was continuously trying to evade any kind of coming together, Ponce would step on his leading foot to hold him in place, and then unload some very well placed left hooks to the body.

And all of this was in reply to a devastating setback which has made many a fighter pack it in and call it a career - that is quite an achievement for a man from a poor, secluded, indigenous mountain tribe that had never before yielded a pro athlete.

I've posted an awful lot on Broner before, so I won't bother. Plus I'm pretty pissed off with him right now.
