http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...s-came-to-rule-german-fight-game-2303979.html he TV figures and attendances over in german are ridiculous. its huge business over there. quite clearly heavyweight boxing has moved from vegas to berlin.
And the reason? They are on regular cable instead of ppv. The ppv crap is what is turning boxing into a niche sport.
there is a place for PPV with Marquee fights. Only thing is, every Alphabet Belt fight is being touted as such. PPV should be reserved for super fights. end of story.
PPV isn't the worst thing about Germany Home town fighters getting gifted decisions, thats what is killing the sport
Klitschko has become a household name, even for people not interested in boxing. I was at a conference at the Austrian Parliament in Vienna and somebody was talking about a giant plane. He said, 'It was Klitschko size' and everybody knew what he meant.
:good:good:good I remember reading discussions about Wk and Haye negotiations here... some people on these boards, mostly from UK and USA couldn't grasp the fact that there is no such thing as PPV in germany and that kind of business has really no chance at all (German Sky which is PPV is hardly breaking even). I hope it stays that way for a long time... I like watching boxing and I would even pay... but I know tons of people who wouldn't and that is the point - not losing a huge market for a few $$ more.
"When Haye won the WBA title in Nuremberg in 2009 against Nikolai Valuev, who was born and raised in Russia but based locally, the television audience was 8.4m; more importantly, and amazingly, the fight was viewed by 40.5 per cent of all Germans watching television that night. The Klitschko figures dwarf that, with as many as 60 per cent of all Germans watching television on a Saturday night tuning in to watch another calculated Klitschko win." Thats wild. Haye-Valuev was watched by 40.5% of tv watching Germans and Klitschko fights average 60%. In america a successful PPV is watched by maybe 1% or 2% of people. No need for PPV...let advertisers pick up the price that PPVs pass on to the consumers.
