    Think of what a challenge that was. I mean Oscar fighting a guy that much bigger and stronger who was a true great. One of the biggest risks I have ever seen in the sport.... and its particularly amazing when you realize Oscar was the biggest money maker in the sport.... HE DID NOT NEED THAT RISK MORE THAN ANYONE! Now I agree Oscar has said and done some ****y things in the last few years... but what a warrior, what a heart. He deserves mad respect.

    Oscar chased legacy as a cashcow, that is pretty amazing. I remember really rooting for him in that fight only to be so mad at him when he got ko'd.
    imagine floyd with oscars guts, he would have fought martinez at 160 by now.

    Yep!

    Oscar definitely has bigger balls than calzaghe who should have been in the ring with Hopkins versus fighting some bum in Wales.

    If the money was OK, Oscar was there. I don't think he had much fear of losing a boxing match. Quite rare for a guy of his talent.

    good thread! de la hoya maximised his career, he fought everyone, and didn't fear losing. the sport needs more fighters like him. people say 'he lost all his big fights', but he didn't. yes, he lost a fair few, but that's what happens when you fight everyone. fighting hopkins at 160 was great. he tried, and lost, but it doesn't tarnish his legacy. mayweather and pacquiao need to realise that fighting martinez and losing wouldn't tranish their legacies either. they would be praised for trying, and just hanging in there would be considered an achievement. i guess these days the whole false 'invincible' thing sells though...
