Devon Alexander, just because he's not doing right by some of these dudes he's losing to and a lot of people are blaming Saint Louis.
So far Rigondeaux is really disappointing me, mainly because he turned professional so late in his life and has so little fights at the moment. Clottey would be another active fighter today. Could have gone places, but chose not to. Overall, definitely Salvador Sanchez. He died at 23, and is an ATG!!!! Imagine if he had lived on....
Starling. Did knock out Breland to become a world champion, but I've always wondered if the memory of Charles Newell hampered him ever after, the way Campbell did Max Baer, and Baroudi did Charles. Wouldn't pull the trigger in his first match with Don Curry, and wiled away much of the time clowning. 27 knockouts in 45 wins is much less than he was capable of, and four of his six defeats were either by SD or MD.
His name might not mean as much to a lot of the non-Brits on here, but I've always felt let down by Dean Francis for one reason or another. Talented but wayward boxer-puncher who injured his right shoulder really badly a few years ago and fell off the train when a fight with Calzaghe was looming back in the late 90's. Edit: some nice calls so far btw
very good informative post as usual . You could have brought Emile Griffith as an example as well , and Benn , and Eubanks .
This is a bit more the sort of thing I'm after rather than the obvious ones like Sanchez and Tyson etc. Maybe some even more less obvious ones or ones that weren't from your era/lifetime eg. Eddie Booker or someone similar. Or even fighters who weren't that good in the scheme of things but who still should have done more in your eyes.
Greg Page Michael Dokes Pinklon Thomas All were earmarked as being Larry Holmes' succesor at one point or other, but all underachieved.
Nice calls Stevie. :good What about Tony Tubbs? At his Peak he looked superbly skilled & lightning fast with combinations & a sharp rapier jab, when he outboxed Bonecrusher & Page in '85. Tubbs even nearly decisioned Witherspoon in '86, but he was about a stone of lard overweight, & that lost him the fight. I blame cake & donuts for making Tubbs underachieve in his career.
A obscure name for non-brazilians Tin.........he wasn´t from my era...but was bronze medalist in Olympics.....Servílio de Oliveira..... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7O3cckUN2c&feature=related[/ame] People talk about him being regarded as one of the most natural talented fighters in Brazil, but unfortunately had an eye injury......
