Fighters who disappointed you the most

His father Philip (and you've seen me discuss him before, RC) was a negaholic shithead who did his son's self confidence no favors. This ******* told the press prior to Dokes that his son had only something like a 20 % chance of winning. Dempsey's father Hiram actually bet on Willard to beat him, and we all know what a POS Old Man ******* Gregorio Benitez was. I wish these people would have been able to do what the Beach Boys Brian Wilson did, in telling his drunkenly abusive POS old man Murry to take a hike.

 

yes, you're right...I recall you mentioning that father of his...and the parallel with daddy Wilson is a good one, except even worse for poor Gerrie, since he was a fighter.

 

James Toney.... Never have I seen such a poor work ethic in such a talented boxer.

David Tua.
"Hey David,if you throw some punches maybe you have a shot at beating Lennox Lewis."

 

David Tua. The guy had a rock iron chin and iron power to match. He was born with two of the greatest gifts a boxer could ask for. He just got lazy and never lived up to his potential.

Evander Holyfield disappoints me, too. It's the inconsistency. He'd fight brilliantly one night, and fight pitiful in his next fight. You never know how he's gonna do.

Mike Tyson's career would have went so much better if he kept his head on straight. When the fame, money, and women showed up, Tyson wasn't mature enough to handle it. His youth was his blessing and his curse.

 

Roberto Duran for the "No Mas."

It would have made more sense if any fighter in the entire history of boxing had quit like that than Duran.

 

Naz is a good shout as is Mercer.
From a British perspective Herol Graham, because he never got the fights and when he did he was careless/unlucky (the Jackson KO was a sucker punch), a talented fighter who was much avoided because of his style. He was a little to old when he fought Brewer, who i think he would of beat a few years earlier.
I might get a bit of stick for this, but Roy Jones for not giving us fights that we all wanted, to see if his genius could be tested.

When I was a kid, the mellower original album version of "Help Me Ronda" (for which the spelling was later changed to "Rhonda" on the singles release) was one of my favorite tunes, but I was always baffled by the volume fading in and out towards the end. Now, decades later, having listened to the tapes of that session, I can never think of that song the same way again, both hearing and picturing that son of a ***** drunkenly ****ing around with the dials in the control room, taking all the joy out of what should have been joyful experiences.

 

A couple of Kronk guys come to mind;

Bernard Mays. He had that big amateur career and was a hot commidity and a guy to watch progress as a pro.

Another one was the disappearing act of DuJuan Johnson after that Pryor fight. He looked like a formidable guy against anyone and then was gone.

Duane Thomas. Likable guy and had to do everything the hard way. He left Kronk and what a huge error in judgement & the ballgame was over.


And what about Mickey Duff's guy > licking Duran, Kirkland Laing? I thought he won the fight about 9 rounds to 1. but you pretty much have to in order to squeek out a close decision over the popular fighter. He beat Duran pillar to post. What a bunch of opportunities for the guy and great timing to do something with his career.
