How long would it take (to train at boxing) and be able to defend yourself?

May pitch this to Comedy Central :happy
In all seriousness I think it cant hurt to learn to Box, will get you in shape and give you a sense of discipline if nothing else. I'd rather take a beating in the ring and have the skills if I have no other option to defend myself. As Virus said though Krav Maga would be better and I have done both.

I feel like it was even racially offensive in some way...

I say 1 out of 10, but I have a pretty refined, gentlemanly sense of humor so I won't be too harsh on your rating.

After reading it properly instead of just skimming over it, I can see why you'd think this.

I also cosign the idea of you sharing the other 3 stories if they aren't too embarrassing.

hahahahhahahahahahahahhahahaha, didn't know Eastside boxing had a chat room :rofl

actually wasn't referring to you babe but do you really want me to share my other stories? I think it goes without saying that any story I tell is interesting and this is probably the greatest thread this forum has ever seen, but what do I get out of it?

I might share them if I could get 3 people to say how amazing I am & how much they love me, and besides the stories are much more interesting than the pizza one SO CONSIDER IT

I wasn't saying I agreed with you btw, I would have fought over that whether I was a boxer or not.
But anyway since I seem to have your attention for a moment, listen to this:
Mate I'm an active fighter. I've been boxing for over a year and just had my first fight. Boxing will not help you that much in self-defence, it might just help you be more athletic and less panicky when it comes to a fight.
You could play basketball as well, which would also help you in self-defence as it would help you be more athletic and be more used to rough physical contact.
But dude boxing is just a sport, you do it cos you like it, and for no other indirect reason. Boxing training is tough ****, and if you don't like it, you won't make it.
So box if you want to box, take specific self-defence classes if you want to defend yourself.
    And act less gay. :!:
There is more to life than being really really really ridiculously good-looking

It doesn't as far as I'm aware...

I love you to bits, man. I'd love to hear your stories of honorable fighting.

Just had to add this, I'd be extremely embarrassed to even know this young man. :rofl:rofl:rofl

Lol. To be fair, it's been over a decade since I last stepped foot in a boxing gym...

I feel sorry for the OP. While he has generally come across as a twat and rejected some reasonable advice, it is obvious he's got a chip on his shoulder that clouds his ability to process threats (and his options) sensibly. I suspect this is why self-defense is not as appealing to him vs learning how to fight better. He is determined to fight with randoms on the street if he is ever verbally harassed. In his fantasy, he is able to dish out punishment and teach them unforgettable lessons. Kid needs to grow up.
