Imagine all the top heavyweights in the 1930s decided to weigh 240lbs and they had today’s methods, I am talking sharkey, schmeling, baer, uzcudun, kingfish, risco, laughran etc all decided (without yet knowing if they could beat carnera the way they were already) to bulk up. wouldnt they have been a disadvantaged? wouldnt carnera have had more of a chance?

ps: the title was suposed to say "imagine in the 1930s if max schmeling, jack sharkey, max baer, jim braddock and their contenders all weighed 240lb so they could compete with carnera? "

Well, for one thing they'd be bigger.

But for everything else, it's pretty impossible to say. All of their styles would be completely different, power, speed, balance, footwork, defense, offense, etc.

They would all become lardass Caveman Peter fat plodder clones. Primo Canera would look like a proper mint skilled boxer, dominating all teh fat plodders who plod into his jab And get bloody pizza faced!

Carnera would have had a field day but a properly built-up, well-conditioned Max Baer would have been a nightmare for him. A fat Baer would have been too slow to connect with the bombs that he downed Carnera with and would have plodded his way to a decision loss.

some good points here folks. I think Baer had the frame to be more useful a weight bigger but it would not improve his workrate which was already less than his rivals anyway. The others would be hindered.

I cant help thinking the same kind of thing has hapened to the HW division the last 10 years anyway. The klit boys, even old lewis in his last few fights, are kind of flattered by the fact that the other heavyweights were like 29lb or so heavier than they needed to be. Most heavyweights today are handicapped by their weight.

I rate the Kilt boys at the moment because they have cleaned out the superheavyweigts. Note I say super heavyweights. The division they have dominated has plunged into a league of fighters experimenting with their bodyweight mass at the expence of trying to be good lean, fast paced fighters who used to be called "heavyweights".

No difference, because protein shakes wouldn't mix properly with a wooden spoon in an old mixing bowl.
