I think Haye actually has no fundamental boxing skills at all, all he throws are arm punches, can't throw a jab & throws no combinations Wlad boxed his head off...I still found it an exciting fight cos 1 punch could've ended it at any time
Very good post. Agree, although I think Haye's ability to slip punches so well, and cause Wlad's usually VERY effective jab to miss so often, and given that Haye did not gass out, and stunned Wlad late. Given all that I see a rematch as certainly worthwhile and sellable. But Haye did need to take more chances, and in a rematch, Same for Wlad. That's my guess and hope, anyway.
Haye fared much better than I predicted. He managed to tire Wlad enough so Wlad could not do much in the final rounds. He sow and avoided punches well from Wlad. He should not rematch Wlad. He will loose badly next time. He should never try to get in the ring with Vitaly. Speed won't matter. Vitaly does not forgive you any mistakes in the ring and Haye does them all the time.
Ray Austin, Tony Thompson, and Shannon Briggs are all similar in size and/or weight to Lennox Lewis. I didn't see the Klitschkos avoid them. If the size difference is the main obstacle as you claim, wouldn't Valuev be unbeatable? Or could there possibly be something else, say Wladimir's accuracy, deceptively fast hand speed, and defense or Vitali's durability, awkward/unique style, and ring generalship.
I was very surpised the one or was it twice that Haye used his jab. I only watched him against Valuof.... He's a very fast hooker, and his over head right is dangerous. Had he jumped in a couple of times with that suprize jab and doubled it, he could have had a chance to throw a straight right or cross his right. He could have hooked off that surprize jab. Like I say, I don't know him out side of Valuof, in he never fought in Germany...not at Cruiser. Many hookers can't hook off a jab, or double jab, or throw a right cross. Does Haye have those tools? I did not expect to see Valuof 2. Valuof has climbed in my respect in spite of being slow and having no defence. Well Wlad did not crumble..and he was hit once real hard....and a second time hard...both times he came back strong in the round. So Wlad's not gutless. Byrd may have been as fast as Haye, but had a different style of trying to pick off the punch, parry it and come in and out. He did not have Haye's power. Byrd did say Wlad's hands are hard to see when standing in front of them. Props to Haye for making him miss so much. I'd never seen Wlad miss so much. Wlads cutting off the ring was very good, and both had good feints. Even a missed jab kept Haye out of range. Everyone was saying small heavy....at 6'3" vs 6'6" is no difference between a man of 6 foot vs a man of 6'3". Haye was prime Ali sized. 210-212. both at '6 3" then though 6-3 was tall. 30 pounds does make a difference when both are totally fit. Reach is so important when both are fast. Wlad may well have been the second fastest man in the ring. Haye I don't think ever faced a faster man. I think Wlad surprized him with his speed. Definatly surprized him with his fast feet, and ring cutting ability. Haye was on the ropes a lot....I don't think he planned to be on them, just near them. All time great Jab....yes...vs an all time fast runner with very good upper body motion. Wlad is faster than his brother...and Haye would fight the same way against him. Ali's all time great jab did not look all that good against Norton. It was a boxing match...not the slugging match promiced...but it takes two to tango. In that Haye chose to box....he got out boxed. Reach is so very important in boxing matches. Being a hooker, loses reach. Standing too far out, negates the speed of attack against another fast man. Wrong tatics on Haye's part. He believed ESP....Wlad has a china chin.
If Haye concentrated on punching more than falling for no reason, he might have done something. This isn't a case of SIZE, it's a case o skills. And David Haye b_tched out last night, plain and simple. Talked all that sh_t about how boring Wlad is and he proved to be one of the most boring fighters I've ever watched. He will NEVER fight on HBO again.
This was a good thread until this. I had Wlad to win on pts and he did, the fight went pretty much as I expected. I couldn't get my head around how he was going to reach the big man. All wlads game is based around utilizing his size advantage over a smaller man, keeping the distance - his defence simply involves taking a step back. Dont want to take anything away, apart from Vitali, haye would beat everone else in this division atm and look good doing it.... unlike Wlad whom would win of course, but without any 'slickness'. The thing i learnt from the fight was that haye was much quicker, looked more fluid - the more naturally tallented fighter, he could take a semi reasonable shot too - although i'm not sure wlad landed clean once - and this is with haye dangling his head out with his hands by his side... hardly cowardly. If Wlad is 6' 3, we arent having this conversation basically. And, with this, Wlad isnt going to get beat by anyone less than 6'6, maybe apart from lewis, whom was 6'5 and is a different class.
My honest assessment of the fight: Haye did considerably better than I thought he would. He hit Wlad with some good shots. It's been 5 years since Wlad has been hit at all. That alone is impressive. Also, if Haye had risked more he might have gained more. But I think he went into the fight with the ultimate goal of not getting KTFO, so he played it very, very safe. Too safe. Haye's technique is flawed, to say the least. He looked like an amateur flailing at times. But he's got a ton of heart, regardless what his critics may say, and in the 12th had a real shot at ending the fight, but couldn't finish it. I'd actually like to see a rematch. I thought it was an interesting chess match. The toe excuse is pathetic though. Haye lost. Get over it. Move on.
Great attempt at educating a dumbass. Usually, I do this job but it gets so tiresome. You forgot Macline that Wlad thoroughly outboxed and K.O'ed years ago. Wlad has fought and defeated so many fighters who rival him in size. K.O. artist Jefferson comes to mind. Wlad sparked him out in a couple of rounds. Wlad's boxing career spans a decade and a half of near total domination of all types and sizes and styles of fighters. He has been ranked for years now in the U.S. based bible of boxing Ring Magazine as a top 10 pound for pound fighter. High praise indeed for this great fighter and credit to the sweet science.
The size difference was a big factor in this fight.. It actually made me wonder.. If Mikkel Kessler (his jab and right was excellent in his prime, much like Wladimirs) had the same size as Wladimir, could he have been just as dominant?
