Heavyweight Division Needs New Weight Rules

Please don't. We don't need the farce we have in the lower weight divisions where bums get crowned a division title and then someone gets to fight them from the same stable to rack up weight divisions. There is no catchweight BS in the heavyweights. Tyson in his prime was around 210. It didn't stop him from fighting guys 40 pounds over him.

As it is the HWs (outside of Klltchkos) is one of the weaker divisions, and not deep at all.... For the most part i dont think the size advantages matter as much as you think they do...

After a certain weight, size can actually be somewhat of a disadvantage... Why dont you thik we have 7-0 300 lb hws??? Or even 6-5 300lb musclebound types dominating.. There are sure plenty out there..,,.. Valueve the only huge one, but he dont count he was a paper champ and probably should have lost his fights with a faded average John Ruiz, an a washed up near 50 Holyfield..

Klit bros,Bowe,Lewis were exception to the rule., rare big men who had skill... But theres way more Tye Fields,Julius Longs and other non descript giants who go nowhere... Ali, Fraizer,YoungForeman (220),Holmes,Tyson,Holyfield are all time great hw who weighed 220 or less, and id favor most(almost all) of those guys over the Klit bros.

 

just so happens that lewis was bigger is one of the best fighters at heavyweight in the last 30 years...so irrelevant...
and riddick bowe was a guy that would have beaten alot of great heavyweights in that short window of of 1991-1993 , before he lost his desire to fight and would rather eat

Heavyweight is supposed to be the open division where you can challenge bigger men and beat them. All your idea will do is water down boxing, eliminate the lineage of one of its most storied divisions, and add 12 new belts.

Fact is that Haye could have made cruiserweight. He chose to fight at heavyweight because he thought he could win. Manny Pacquiao can make lightweight or lower, yet he fights at welter because he can win. Henry Armstrong held the equivalent of 6 titles in separate divisions at once because he could. But not everybody is good enough to beat on guys bigger than they are.

You need to understand that anyone who weighs in at or below 220 is for all intents and purposes able to make cruiser and choosing not to. And once you get over 200lb, anyone can knock anyone out. A fit 220lb man is nothing to **** around with even if you're 250.

In conclusion, your idea sucks major donkey ballz and will hopefully never catch on, because boxing is ****ing itself bad enough as it is. If anything they need to cut the nontraditional divisions and use them only as catchweights for fights between divisional champs. (Example: 154 ceases to have champs and is used as the middleweight catchweight for fights between the welterweight and middleweight champ, Floyd vs. Sergio for example.)

 

Great idea, but the issue is competition for big athletes not really just size, though it plays a huge part.

Good big men are being sucked away into sports where either the damage is hidden (US Football) or minimal (Basketball). The "sucking" effect was first in the US. It is now in Europe. My guess is that in 15 years, Europe won't be producing quite as many solid big men either.

Less (or hidden) damage, better conditions, union, endorsement cash, and a pension? What guy with athletic talent would choose Boxing? Only a guy who had no choices or a real fighting spirit.

 

:good Exactly 220 lb hw like Young George,Shavers,Tyson, and probalby Liston all hit harder than any 250 plus Super hw... Lewis,Wlad are right there but IMO those 4 hit harder.

My fear is that there aren't enough super heavys to generate interest, and the heavys might just bulk up even more to fight them. It's worth a try, but it might not catch on.

 

lol no, i was trying to add validity to your point. Hell a young 200lb Louis could bang as hard as any SHW. Baer was 200-210 for pretty much his whole prime

 

:good Exactly theres only a handful of good super Hws... You would end up getting some real tomatoe cans getting title shots... **** Ray Austin would probably be one of the top contenders... And Tye Fiels would be a gate keeper or maybe crack the top 10.

 

This is ridiculous. What the Heavyweight Division needs is an enima. It needs someone to step up and show some spine...not fight like a goddamn coward.

 

They've been doing this already anyway. No need for any changes.

It used to go 175+ was heavyweight.

Then, they brought in cruiser weight, so heavy was 190+.

Then, cruiser was pushed up to 200, so heavy is 200+

That's a 25 pound increase in the last few years. At worst, they might push cruiser up to 205, 210, but that's irrelevant.

Guys like Holy, Haye, Adamek etc will still fight at heavy, they'll weigh in fully clothed if they have to weigh over the cruiser limit, because that's where the money is.

 

This is not about Haye, its about boxing and I believe its time for boxing to change and adjust to the demands of the public to see more competitive fights in the heavyweight division. It use to mean something to say Im the heavyweight champ of the world. It dont mean squat now cause everybody know that you really didnt have to do much. The lighter weights is drawing all the crowds and making all the money. I havent seen a good heavyweight fight since LL left. When was the last PPV HW fight. Any fighter over 230 should be classified as superheavy. Get rid of the cruiser and make it light heavy, heavy and super heavy. It would make for a lot more competitive fights.
