A real boxing fan is a rare thing. most people when they start out boxing fans they get into the personalities in addition to the boxing and all that and then the rivalries. That is why HBO does biographies and stories to personlize a fighter. I am not sure a fighter watches Hagler vs. Hearns or Ali Frazier and becomes a boxing fan. There are many people who saw those fights and saw many great fights and are not hardcore boxing fans. It is something you become because you love it and something about it.

Maybe the guy would become a fan after being lured in by these all action, exciting examples, but would evolve into being a real afficianado of the sport's more scientific, strategic side after that...otherwise he remains as what is known as a "casual fan" that knows of only a few big names and can't appreciate some of boxing's more subtle values.
