Why Can`t America Produce A Decent Heavyweight Anymore?

Football and basketball.
Not enough boxing gyms....and why should a kid go learn boxing...he sees name boxers get their ass handed to them in MMA....so he learns something effective for real fighting.

More than likely due to budget cuts the police no longer teach Juvenal delinquents how to box...

Not enough intramural boxing between prisons, like Sing Sing vs Atlanta Fed.
My that would be a way for the State and the Federal governemnt to make a bit of money....

 

Very few boxers make real money. Many NFL/NBA players make real money.

College education is available to talented football/basketball players but not boxers.

Football/basketball are less dangerous.

 

The ***ball/Apehoop excuse is pretty damn weak. Boxing is a minority sport in pretty much every country yet others are still capable of producing decent heavyweights despite the lure of bigger sports.

To be honest, they are probably all locked down with the police state actions the nation has erected since 9/11. Nowadays if a city has 100 parole cars, 96 of them will be parked in AA neighborhoods railroading them into jail on trumped up charges. That's not anything new, but since Ronald Reagan privatized prisons, it has become big business in jailing your own citizens, and the corporations that own them no longer offer such diversions like getting a degree, boxing, etc.

It may not be the most important factor, but the privatization of USA prisons is so offensively unbelievable (go, Reagan!) it' hard to even discuss it.

i don't buy the nfl, nba argument.

how many boys at 15 actually sit down and say hmm i wonder what sport i'll go pro in? you have to be involved from a young age and be enveloped in the culture of a sport to reach the top (obviously there are odd exceptions like maravilla)

lebron james is a tremendous athlete and basketball player and you would imagine that his physique would be the key to defeating wlad or vitali. however does he have the heart, mentality, bravery or ruthlessness to be a world class fighter, no. just the same as wlad couldn't just walk into the england rugby team.

wlad and vitali are doubly unique in that they have a monsterous physique, great intellect and the correct skills and discipline due to being brought up in the hothouse soviet boxing school. it's like leo messi, he obviously has the innate skill but going to barca at 12 made him what he is.

 

Not buying this. The NBA has very few if any heavyweight prospects. The NFL has a few, but American talent in the 70's 80's and 90's was fine when football or basketball were popular.

The real reason is international competition. The USA used to be the best at Golf and Tennis. not anymore. Golf and Tennis like boxing are international sports. This means less champions.
