Just found 4 new bouts that took place in late May 1902. Brings his total of knockouts to 99. Pray that I can find one more to push him to the magic 100 KO category: http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=9026&cat=boxer
Yes. A lot of the old timers did those "Meet all comers" weeks at the local venues. Sometimes two or three fights per day (limited rounds).
Many thanks:smoke I tend to surf in the middle of the night (less crowds:yikes). So a friend suggested I was a "surf bat" and started calling me that. Which was a coincidence because an old L.A. Goth/Punk band I used to like called 45 Grave had a song called that. The rest, as they say...
Just hit the link and hit play(and this came out in 1983, not 1993 as listed): http://vimeo.com/24997627 :tomb:tomb
Corrected the date for the bout with the Bully to May 29. Could you add Al Herford as the referee for the other three bouts?
Meet all comers, or, if nobody was available, he sparred with Herman Miller for 2 or 3 rounds. Since Gans went hard at them from the first round, could be considered real bouts, not exhibitions, in my opinion.
Falls into the same category as some of dempseys bouts which shouldn't not be considered legitimate imo.
If you can find a more definite source for the result of the 1902-03-07 bout with Jack Ryan, we may end up at 100 KO's. I have several conflicting reports, NC3, W-TKO3, W-TKO4, W-TKO5. I have kept the NC3 on his record so far, until it is resolved.
Hey Steve. No, they were legit. The exhibitions were with Herman Miller in between the real fights. These were pros fighting for money and trying to kill each other, not do easy sparring.
