Is there any substance to this.

Read it in a book, Teddy Atlas' I think:think

Anyway story goes that he used to help old people with their shopping until they got in a lift where he would then beat them up and steal their cash.

It's the only time I've heard this story so didn't think much into it considering Atlas and Tyson have history but he was a pretty troubled guy so who knows.

Anyone else heard anything like or similar to this

It's certainly feesable and I believe it. He was poor and a street thug, he wouldn't care who he hurt as long as he got what he wanted. He was not in a stable mentality at all, and I don't think he ever was or will be.

yes, the story was that he helped an old lady carry her groceries home and when they got in the elevator, he knocked her out and robbed her.

Teddy Atlas said it so it must be a fact. Atlas is teh no.1 top Tyson-XPERT as appointed by ESPN. Teddy trained Tyson 1979-1982.

Tyson was a very bad kid from a very bad neighbourhood.
Yes, I believe Atlas' story is accurate. Things like that happen in the ghetto.
Tyson was a menace to society at 12 years old.

unimaginable things happen in the worst parts of the United States. It would not surprised me at all if Tyson did this, and all those he ran with, and that it also goes on everyday today in the slums of NY and I know it happens here in Detroit. An old man was actually beaten so badly last year in a mugging here in Detroit that he died, and he was right outside his house.

Homeless young kid with no guidance - would not shock me at all if he did those things to get by. As Tyson said in an interview "You must understand, if you were a scumbag you were respected. Being a scumbag was a good thing."

And this is true because I have witnessed it myself.

Yes he definitely did do this
Ive heard it from Tyson himself and its in his Autobiography

Jack Newfield also gave a pretty good description of it, in Baddest Man On The Planet Documentary

Tyson was no badboy wannabe, he was a genuine criminal.

Tyson was a thug from the streets, a really poor kid. You ever heard of that saying?

"You can take a kid off the streets but you can't take the streets off the kid."

He's probably done a lot of more worse things then this probably even gave someone a near death sentence. If you watched his documentary he said this himself that he didn't **** Desiree Washington and he's done far a lot more worst things than that, hence why he took up the 3 year prison to make all up for it.

No, Atlas was sick of Tyson's bad behavior and troubles with the law being swept under the rug as it was, then when he came home and found out what Mike did he went and threatened him with the gun.

I can't say that I blame him, Mike at 15 was stronger than most people could ever hope to be and obviously was a superb fighter. Despite Atlas being 26, Mike was stronger than most people who were 30. Atlas put the gun to his head, threatened him for if he should ever do it again, then left. It's not he beat Mike, he simply got Mike's attention the only way possible for anyone other than Cus D'Amato.

do you think all street kids do this? poverty is not an excuse.

a lot of damaged kids lose all sympathy for others and put their own needs first since this is what others have done to them but most know what is bad. who knows for sure?

Atlas says this, but Mike Tyson says differently.. Tyson denies that it ever went down the way Atlast claims. It was in a recent interview
