Why is Holyfield given so much credit for the Bowe trilogy?

Holmes and Foreman, though old, had established themselves as top contenders for the title. Plus, let's be honest, there was big money in facing a couple of aging ATGs.

I put old Foreman and Holmes up against the Grants and Golotas of the world. You KNOW they had better chins, that's for sure!

And what ham n' eggers did Holy lose to when he held the title or was even near his prime? When he was near his best, only other great fighters beat him.

 

So, once again. Holy gets a pass for the things you rip into other fighters for doing.

Yeah, you would Zak. Foreman that lost to Briggs and got a ****ing robbery against Axel Schultz. (Mind you, I think he was jobbed against Briggs).

Michael Moorer is not a great fighter.

Or is this again one of Holy's elusive primes, that come and go with his wins and losses.

Holmes did with his win over Mercer, but Foreman didn't.

Foreman's most notable wins were against Rodrigues (who had been a ranked contender earlier but who just gotten stretched by a single Holyfield right hand) and Cooney (who hadn't won a fight in almost 4 years).

I want to say, I don't want to rag on Holyfield.

What he did as a cruiserweight was outstanding, and to have the career at heavy he did coming from cruiser was fantastic.

It's the hypocrisy and attitude of some of his fans that get me, that excuse things in holy's career that they rip into other fighters for.

I still don't see what it is about Holyfield that gets him free passes all the time.

 

The biggest knock on him IMO is that Evander Holyfield only ever beat US fighters.

He never, ever fought the international guys - until losing to Lewis.

While US fans knock "eurobums" as not being able to cope with US fighters, Holy was truly a domestic fighter. More so than any 'stay at home' euro of the time.

While Tyson, Bowe -and lewis of course fighting in the US while being British(Canadian) - all fought guys from all over the globe, Holy never did.

holyfield was a light heavy in the olympics, bowe was super heavy...

Maybe not great, but damn good. A light HW titlist before he won the HW belt. And, that decision he got against Holyfield was debatable to say the least. Holyfield should have gotten the nod, imo - and I was hardly alone in thinking this at the time!

Who are you suggesting he was ducking? Super Brian Nielson (who he just beat this year)?

He was scheduled to fight Damiani, but ended up with Bert Cooper when Damiani pulled out with a back injury the week of the fight, FWIW.
