Why is Holyfield given so much credit for the Bowe trilogy?

On a slightly serious note, Bowe was unfortunately a waste of potential. He could have been very, very good.

 

You just listed names that Holy could've fought and didn't. You dont even have a time line as to when Holy shouldve fought the guys you named.

now you got povetkin and chagaev who neither has 30 fights yet one has been a pro 13 years the other for 7. brec has them ranked #14 and # 19
and they fight for the wba regular title next...
think holyfield would have said "no thanks mike, we arent ready yet, maybe next time" povetkin does it and they still talk about him like hes some kind of factor...boxing is such a joke these days....

I didn't see that potential in Bowe, and while he won the title, it was over a naturally smaller man in Holy. Bowe trashed his belt rather then face Lewis. :dead

 

Firstly. I am not excusing the terrible activity rate and reluctance to face challenges that some of todays fighters have.

If some of them had been in tougher fights previously, then they may perform better when they do get their big shot, withoug looking like a deer in the headlights.

If Holyfield staid at CW and went up to 200 lbs with the division (up from 190) he would have been maybe the only man to be considered by a large enough % of the sports world as the best fighter ever in his weight class. In every other weight class there are many debates on who was the best. At Cruiserweight I don't see anyone being as good as Evander if he staid in that division.

Holy isn't a great cause he beat Bowe, hes a great cause what he showed in the ring and he beat other real good opponents too. Holyfield is also the GOAT CW ever. Ill take a CW Holy over any past, current or former CW.

At CW, Holy > Haye, Mormeck, Bell, Adamek, Gomez, Hill, Jirov, Cunningham etc..

 

There are 2 different arguments here.

1 is about Holy and his overall career. The other is purely and simply Holyfield as a heavyweight.

Zak's argument is that Holy was the best heavy of his time, better than Lewis, Tyson and Bowe (and obviously everyone else).

I don't think that way, quite strongly.

However, if we're talking about Holy as a package, including CW, then that's a very different argument.

 

The second fight was Bowe's to lose, and he lost it. He came in heavy and overconfident. And then, just as he was stepping it up, the fan man came in from the heavens and destroyed his momentum. Sure, I'll give Evander credit for his effort against a big, big guy, but I feel he hardly proved he was the better man that night.
