i know that the muay thai roundhouse kick hits like a baseball bat because of its technique, but what is the main difference between the two kicks? i believe that tae kwon dos rounhouse kick has the snap in it and has a late rotation in the hips, while the muay thai more or less swings the kick into the ribs. please correct me if im wrong?

Placement of the foot, on TKD you hit with the ball of the feet or heal, muitai hits with the shin.

You wear pajamas to do a tkd kick but you wear shorts and tie ropes around your biceps to do the muay thai one. Subtle differences, hard to pick up if you're not trained in real muay thai training camp.

muay thai kicks swing around from the hhip with the leg straighter and land on the shin, this gives the leg a lot more inertia and makes for a harder hit that will dig in more than a tae kwon do kick excecuted by an average tae kwon do guy.

tae kwon do kicks you start to swing the hip over with the knee bent, and then snap the knee as the hip turns so your leg whips into the other person. they are MUCH faster and harder to check, but if you are not trained to dig in (and most tkd people arent, they just try to snap it at the guy and score a point) it is not as powerful. they are supposed to land right above where the shin and ankle meet, but most tkd guys land with the ankle because they are not kicking hard enough for it to matter.

if you learn how to turn your weight into the kick and drive through with your quads and hips properly while keeping your balance then the tkd style kick will hit even harder. i doubt you will be able to find a decent tkd black belt to teach you if you live in north america though, i was really lucky to start out under a 9th degree that came over from korea.

muay thai is better for mma though, in tkd, youhave pads on the shin and ribs so you can land hard with the lower part of the shin, the guy who taught me had broken his shin several times even with the pads and seriously ****ed up his ankles from getting checked and landing in the wrong spot.

The big difference is that tkd practitioners chamber the leg, making it a 2 part kick, and this takes away a lot of the force.

I don't know how to throw a TKD kick, at all but to throw a Thai roundhouse you take a small step forward and/or pivot the foot of the lead leg, turn the hips over and lean the upper body away from the kick, and bring your power hand down by the waist while doing so to maintain your base. The one thing that I know traditional martial arts teach that we don't do in a Thai gym is to "chamber" the kick by bending the knee. In a Thai roundhouse you keep the leg semi-stiff the entire time.

Yes, if one kick to the body drops you, and it didn't land perfectly on the liver, you probably have a glass body (bodies don't have jaws, ya know).
