The jab? Maybe in terms of length, but like i said.... If Holyfield was able to get past it, then Schmeling with his superior head movement, parries, and right hand counter would have some success. I do not think Bowe had a nice right as a pure outfighting weapon. It was very looped and he was quite open with it when he missed. The same can be said of Baer, although I think the power edge goes to maxie's by a great deal. If bowe wins this it's by smothering and letting his hands go up close. Schmeling was a specialist at dealing with skilled boxers of any kind. Hard, constant, heavy pressure seems to have been his genuine downfall. Bowe can bring that...sometimes.

Bowe of 1991 to 1993 beats Schmeling of 1930 to 1936 but, overall Schmeling is the greater heavyweight....

Bowe would win a decision, but most would rank Schmeling higher on their ATG lists.

I think in a hypothetical fantasy match, the best version of Bowe beats the best version of Schmeling.

In the all-time rankings, Schmeling probably deserves to be a little higher.

Bowe - Too big, strong with great in-fighting and out. Schmeling never weighed over 200. Easy win for Bowe.

    Resume
Bowe - Only lost once against ATG Holy and although had a very short reign he didn't have the several losses Schmeling had. Schmeling was outboxed and knocked out several times in his prime.

    Resume
How do you expain the Schmeling's losses?

    H2H
How does Schmeling deal with a guy that at his peak condition is ~40 to 50 pounds heavier than he is.

I saw your post and Bowe's chin was tested to a bit against Holy and Golota.

Which losses? To Sharkey? Most people and reprters at ringside had Schmeling winning. Hamas? Avenged with a career-ending beating. Baer? Well, he´s far better than anyone Bowe beat but Holy.
Schmeling has muhc, much more depth in his resume, beat quite a bit more ranked fighter and had better longevity. He ranks clearly ahead.

Schmeling was a better puncher than both.

How would Bowe deal with the angles, awkwardness, traps and right hand of Schmeling?

Sorry but weight and size is only an asset if you use it, Bowe doesn´t. He brawls while having an untested chin and huge holes in his defence, putting Schmeling in an excellent position to land his counters from ablges he wouldn´t expect them to come from.

Not so sure. He was in there with some decent punchers and took a LOT of punishment without getting KO'd. Bowe's chin isn't the issue we need to consider before coming to a decision...it's Schmeling's. How would Max take Bowe's best shots on the inside when he never exhibited any ability to do so against the competition of his own era?

He did use his size and strength in winning the title, what fight did you watch? He also used a fine jab, not only to control the fight, but to hurt Evander badly with this weapon. Holy would then trade and come off 2nd best in the exchanges. This version of Holyfield outweighed Scmelling by a fair bit...and still realised that coming in the same weight would see him lose convincingly again, he was overpowered, outboxed and well-beaten.

For the rematch he went back in with Bowe around a stone heavier, roids or no roids, this added weight and strength game Holy the chance to compete inside and, thus saw him come away with a very close win.

The only position Schmelling would be in is a horizontal one.

Sorry but those fights happened pre-prime and at lhw, not relevant here. When ranking a fighter at hw, you have to look what they did at that weight and not at others.

Yes, Bowe had a good jab but Louis had an even better one and see what Schmeling did and how well he countered it. But when did Bowe do that? Lewis did it, Wlad does it but Bowe and Vitali didn´t/don´t. Instead he would have an inside fight and while he was very good there offensivly, especially his uppercut, he was very bad defensivly.
Neusel, Foord and Uzcudun were of similar size as Baer and Schmeling beat them - Uzcudun beat Baer too. True, Bowe would be different, he neither has the chin nor the power of Baer. ;)

There is a good chance for Bowe winning, look at the vote, I voted for him!, but just saying he is bigger and thus he wins is too simplistic and short-sighted. Size would play a role if he wins but it wouldn´t be the reason.

Hu? Bowe did fight no Louis or Baer and Schmeling took Baer´s best for 10 rounds before succumbing and Louis´for together 13. Bowe never fought even punchers in that class. Instead he was hurt by lesser punchers like Holyfield and Hide- lesser punchers than Schmeling too. If a chin is in question here it´s Bowe´s.

He used his strentgth but not so much his size. When did he use his size to keep Holy away from him? When did he lean to sap his energy? Yes, he overpowered and beat Holy, sure. But Schmeling is a different, far more unorthodox fighters, a better puncher and better defensivly than Holy. And his right hand is a better weapon than Holy has.

Yes, because it´s a good tactic for a smaller fighter to get in with a bigger fighter and brawl him instead of using your speed and mobility advantage. And for a bigger fighter it´s also a good decision to brawl a smaller opponent instead of keeping him where he can´t hit you and unload from there. Reality is both fought tactically dumb fights - a reason why those fights are so much fun. You think Schmeling - of all people- would make the same mistake?

You thnk Tyson would storm into the ring to KO him after he beat Bowe? Rather unlikely.

once again I will have to go along with the vast majority. I cannot see Schmeling getting it on with the 6-5 behemoth and standing at the bell. Bowe sets too much of a blistering pace. Max cannot hold RB at bay. I think it might go ten

Nobody ever missed bowe and neither would schmeling. Bowe was tough and game but he often became distracted. the focus he would need to get past schmeling was more than he ever had. Bowes chin was not as good as max baer's.

And according to Baer Schmeling had him out on his feet and he´s lucky that he didn´t get it.
