Which of the current big 5 UFC champions is furthest ahead of the chasing pack?

Got to go with GSP. All but cleaned WW out.

LHW is stacked and while JJ smoked Rua, nobody has held the belt for a substantial time since Liddel.

MW Silva has been dominant but its not a deep division by any means.

HW Velasquez looks the real deal. Sure hes been dropped but he recovers quickly. Weak resume though his best wins are zombie Nog and a very overrated Lesnar.

LW Edgar seems solid but he will be beat sooner or later

GSP. Dude went almost 4 years without losing a single round.

 

People always give fighters a chance against GSP before the fight. He still dominates them.

And most everyone gave Sonnen no chance against Silva and we saw how that turned out.

In terms of ability Silva.

He is so far ahead of the pack at middleweight he makes the division look bad. If he left tomorrow, MW would look stacked and would instantly be one of the most exciting and intriguing divisions in the UFC. The only crack in his facade of total dominance is the fact that he's had one hard fight against Sonnen and some truly bizarre fights against Maia, Leites and to a lesser extent Cote.

GSP has certainly proved his dominance with his run of defenses and he's forever improving, but his biggest let down is his lack of finishes. I don't want to get into whether he can't finish or doesn't want to finish or has simply forgotten how, the fact is, with the exception of Penn quitting on his stool, he hasn't finished a fight since 2008.

It basically has to sit between those two.

Edgar hasn't cleared up the mess with Maynard, and he's got a half dozen legit challengers to look forward to after that.

Velasquez has yet to defend, and he's got a man-monster in Cigano coming after him. Let alone some very dangerous guys in Strikeforce who may or may not come over.

Jones may have a claim in a few years, he has utterly destroyed anyone put in front of him. But he has yet to defend I still think Machida could pose some serious stylistic problems for him.

Anderson isn't #1 because he struggled against Sonnen and has had some very questionable competition during his run (Irvin, Cote, Leites).

 

I can't decide between Anderson and GSP, but I lean towards the latter. Both have dominated their divisions thus far but Anderson has one potential challenger, Jacare, that I think offers a faint glimmer of a challenge and GSP has none, including Diaz, that I think stand a realistic chance. Actually, it's clearly GSP because I forgot that Sonnen was back.

 

Irvin was his first trip up to light heavy, Cote and Leites weren't as questionable at the time as they appear now.

 

Its between Jones, Silva and GSP. GSP has a new challenger in Diaz and Condit behind that. Silva has Okami who has a win over him/gave him some trouble and Sonnen who was beating him. That leaves Jones who needs to get found out in an area of his game but at present looks like he'll plough through Rampage too.

 

no man on the planet can stand with anderson silva, his striking is light years away from anyone else.

 

I voted Jones, but the answer is actually GSP. There is not a single WW there that will have a chance of beating him.

Silva can very well lose a rematch to Sonnen
Jones may have major problems with Machida
Cain will have a hard time with JDS and Barnett
Edgar has already lost to Maynard
Aldo is the 2nd furthest from the heap IMO.

 

Lutter dominated that fight til he got stupid. That was a low point for me.

Silva is the most skillful but Jon Jones is the most talented and yes he is a few years ahead of the competition and will stay so seeing that MMA has not developed young talent well.
