In an old KO magazine article "50 Fantasy Match-ups". William Dettloff pointed out he felt Walker's overall competition was tougher...and that he fought much bigger and stronger men then Monzon. He stated, "Forget that Monzon would have nearly a five inch height advantage. "The Toy Bulldog" had trouble with fast boxers like Young Corbett III and Loughran, not flat footed tall guys. Walker was tenacious and fearless, and he would be all over Monzon from the opening bell. Walker in nine. Whenever I finished the article, I was surprised from the pick...But I have the utmost respect for Mickey Walker... 15 rounds at middle weight. What is the opinion of the board?
The fight that popped into my head when reading the match-up was Baldomir vs. Gatti. Baldomir playing the role of Monzon, and Gatti as Walker. Baldomir, nor Gatti, are in the same class as Monzon nor Walker. I just invision the fight being similar, without the stoppage. Monzon was to big and strong for Walker to bully, and too good to lose the technique battle. Monzon by decision.
I think it would unfold similar to the Monzon/Valdez...Which were excellent fights...Walker would pursue Monzon more aggressively than Valdez did, perhaps giving the steady Monzon some rough, uncomfortable moments...But Carlos would start finding the range with the jab and the right hand with regularity...It would be a bloody fight for Walker I'm afraid. Monzon beats the legend...IMO
I like Walker, Monzon is no Loughran, and if you got the 30 min highlight, of the Loughran fight, it was pretty close. Also Walker jump up in weight vs Loughran, What gives Walker the edge in head to head is Walker's run in the heavyweight divsion. Amazing the run was better than Loughran's run imo. Walker could box, he had a good jab, and can moved pretty well as he show in the Hudking fight. I dont think Monzon would beat Uzc or draw with Sharkey. I also dont think Monzon has the power so to speak to make Walker respect him. Walker was a man of iron imo. I give Walker a great shot.
I do respect walker a lot , one of this sport's legends , and there are many things about his career that say he could do this one . But at the same time , look how Monzon used his size advantage against smaller guys . Walker's achievements taking on larger guys are astonishing , and they outweigh Monzon's against smaller guys . But i think King Carlos takes this
I want to retract what I wrote in an earlier post regarding this match...Monzon may have outpointed Walker...But he would not have dominated him as I wrote before...After watching more video today, Walker's footwork, and shoulder roll would prevent Carlos from being able land with straight right hands on regular basis as I had written before...Loughran even had difficulty landing with his excellent left jab during their fight...If Loughran can not consistantly jab Walker, Monzon will not be able to either...Carlos has a fight on his hands in this one...and I'm eating some crow right now for dinner... yum yum...I'm not selling Walker short again.
BIG DEE HERE= I have watched films of Walker for 40yrs starting with 8mm films shown on my bedroom wall as a kid. Walker as Bill Dettoff said had problems with fast slick boxers not a guy like Monzon who fought basically flat footed and upright. Monzon who I have ranked above Walker at No 3 all-time in head to head competition would have gotten his ass handed to him by Walker when he was Middleweight Champion. Walker`s greatest learning bout was in the old Polo Grounds in front of 70,000 people by Harry Greb. Harry Greb was the greatest Middleweight who ever stepped into a prize-ring. Walker was schooled that night in 1925 by a force of nature. Greb was the fastest middleweight who ever came thru the ropes. Greb was what I call a pressure-swarmboxer and I know your going to say that there`s no such thing, but that`s what Greb was a unique fighter, one of a kind. Never seen before and never seen again. Jack Dempsey when asked about Greb when I was a kid said Greb was the fastest guy of his size he had ever seen to this day and that was in the late 1960s. Jack said he was faster than Benny Leonard and that was awful damn fast. Walker was a tough sonuvbitch who would do something that Monzon`s opponents didn`t do and thats get inside on Monzon and rip his guts out with body punches. Walker was one of the greatest bodypunchers of all the champions. That`s how he beat those Heavyweights by as he said I GET INSIDE AND BANG THEIR GUTS OUT. This he would do to Monzon and Monzon wouldn`t be able to do anything about it as Walker was also one of the 5 strongest Middleweights ever to hold the title. WALKER WOULD WEAR MONZON DOWN AND KO HIM BY THE MID TO LATE ROUNDS.
Walker had unusual ability for a fighter his size, in that he could compete with much larger opponents. He appears to have good speed, and a lot of power. He is a top fighter in a P4P sense, and would rate higher than Monzon in that regard. This is, however, a head to head match-up. Walker gets hit a lot for someone with his speed. Maybe that has something to do with having a great chin, and being so strong for a little guy. Monzon's size advantage, and Walker's lack of defense would lead to Monzon winning a decision in my opinion.
I think Walker is in with a chance against every atg from ww to lhw and against most borderline greats at hw.
It might have suited him just fine. Looking at the Sharkey fight, it is hard to imagine Monzon imposing himself on Walker.
