Just been watching an interview with the most charismatic guy in MMA - Chael Sonnen, and he made some interesting points about the idea of there being a number one 'pound for pound' in not only MMA, but boxing.

At about 13 minutes in. What do you think of what he's saying? Agree? Disagree?

completely disagree. its a legitimate discussion based on skills, achievements, failures etc same as fantasy match ups. obviously there are no definites but then there are no definites in predicting an upcoming fight like silva-leben (which he did). you aren't involved in their training, you don't know their mental make up etc you are guessing/predicting based on skills, achievement, failures etc

in boxing if it wasn't p4p, people would still be watching **** heavyweights bore us to death because the heavyweight champ is the best in the world. thanks to p4p people are more interested in who is p4p the best in the world and given the standard of fighting p4p typically blows a heavyweight out of the water.

P4P is an in-exact measure but then most measures are.

Chael is a professional troll. He says things for effect this guy gives GSP a bly for settling for boring wins yet slags off the legends of MMA yet they are the ones who went for KO'S and spectacular wins.

In saying that i personally ain't into doing P4P lists i rarely contribute towards them threads as i just don't care for it. People don't have the same criteria and i find it can get a bit pedantic and generally boring.

For me i just look at best in divisions and if your damn good then your up there as best in sport today.

Pound for Pound is, let's face it, a popularity contest for the most part.

Nothing wrong with it. Of course its pointless, at the end of the day it means nothing. But then again neither do fantasy matchups. This place and fan discussion would be very boring indeed if we only dealt with current and past affairs with no room for the imagination.

In work and can't see the clip but "P4P" was originally to simply try and show who would win or who was the better man if the fighters were the same size.

How its used in boxing now has *******ized the term out of all recognition.
