I think Meehan was a fringe contender type. Top 6-10 at best in his day. Meehan along with Buster Mathis, and Tony Tubbs were among the best " fat " heavyweights of all time. Meehan had deceptive mobility, and a bit of a slap and grab type of style. He could be tough to out point in short matches.
He should have stayed at featherweight or lightweight, the fat slob. He has wins over Jack Dillon, Sam Langford and Jack Dempsey. Imagine what he could have done had he been in shape !
He is possibly the most awkward fighter of all time. He never trained and would eat what he liked. It was said that at heavyweight he was so fat punches made no impression on him. Fought a lot of HOFers : Harry Wills, Jack Dempsey, Harry Greb, Benny Leonard and Sam Langford, Harry Wills, Jack Dillon. He fought in every weight possible and looked scarily like Teddy Atlas. I think that's bull**** though. I mean, a little bit of fat on a well-conditioned midsection might help soften the blows, but just being extremely fat and untrained surely cannot be beneficial ! It goes against all good sense, I'm not having it.
I think we have to take Meehan as much with the myth as anything else. The quote was - "..He is so fat, blows do not make an impression on him, and he is so awkward, that even the cleverest of opponents can find no way to reach him effectively..." I still have no clue who's quote that was. I don't care,I like it anyway.
Haha. Very likely, there is not much about Meehan on the web. I image searched and on the second page was a silly picture i made where i had also mentioned Meehan in the post.
In his best days,he was king of the four rounders. As mentioned he won 4 rd decisions over Dempsey, Jack Dillon, Sam Langford, drew with Billy Miske. The only guy those days who beat the hell out of him was,You guessed it, Harry Greb. Greb was ready in his dressing room to windmill. But if he fought Dempsey, Dillon,Langford ,Miske ,standard 10-15 round fights, they most likely whipped him easily. Question ? How many great fighters are behind in points after 4 rounds ? Most likely EVERYONE...
Unconquerable in a four rounder. The flubbery phantom. The fistic fatboy. The porky pugilist. Aye, he was a beast(at flyweight)
He most likely cracked the top ten. I don't put a huge amount of stock on a 4 round victory, the amount he had over quality guys is somewhat impressive I suppose but considering the length I take it with a pinch of salt.
K,was YOUR question serious ? Of course I was serious. Willie Meehan was as successful as he was because of his 4 rd bouts. And yes, were to have fought Dempsey, Dillon, Langford, and Billy Miske regular 10-15 round fights ,they most likely beat him badly. Otherwise why was he fighting those top fighters, 4 round fights? It was a test to see if better heavyweights could catch up to him at this short distance. They couldn't ! And yes K,most every great fighter in some of their 10-12 rd bouts are behind in points, after 4 rds. An analogy I think would be that Bolt, the top 100 meter runner, is usually behind other runners [4 rds] many times ,before he catches up to the wire and wins...And THAT'S what counts ...
One of the stupidest ****ing things I've ever heard :---( I can't understand why it still doesn't ring true. I mean, we live in the age of the fat heavyweight! Why aren't they all that tough? :-( This content is protected
