im not talking a little chubby but actually very over weight. guys like chris arreolla, tyson fury and eddie chambers. I sit on my arse all day at work and do very little in the way of exercise and im not fat. if your an elite pro boxer you must of had some amateur fights and spent a little time in gym, how can that fat still be there?

people lose weight all the time for vanity or health reason but if your whole career and livelihood depended on it shouldn't you recognise the importance of shedding a few pounds?

im not in great shape but as soon as i spend a bit of time in the gym i quickly get addicted and start going every day. after a couple of weeks ive shed 10 pounds.

Well, some of these guys are just naturally fat or have chronic personality problems that manifest themselves in overindulgence, poor self control, etc. In addition, some guys are so relaxed in the ring (James Toney) and have such skill its not hard for them anymore, its just like walking down the street.

Also, injuries and the NEED to train all the time no matter what make it get old after a while: getting hurt and beaten and damaged every day in camp makes you want to take time off, its not like doing ten sets of weights and going 20 minutes on the bike, it wears and tears and makes it tough for them to stay motivated, too.

A lot of heavyweights either want to have the weight or need it, either because they feel it increases their power, ability to be physical, or take a punch, especially in an era where the top two are super heavyweights, and quite frankly other fighters who aren't 6'5+ will have to have a certain amount of 'fat' to be of equal weight. And having tooo much muscle to do so would no doubt impact on their stamina.

Also a lot of boxers train hard, and at the end of it, they can go the desired amount of rounds, but still may look fat....but if they can do the job, aesthetics aren't too important. Not everyone can be David Haye..

because they eat a **** load of bad food...and do very little cardio....

theres an equation i read in one of my runner magazines...you have to run 1 mile to burn up 400 calories....your body burns so many calories a day regardless...but if you eat 2 whoppers and fries and a coke like a 260 heavyweight can do...you could 10 miles and still not break even....

I i could be wrong, it may be only 150 calories..been a while since i read it)

to much value is placed on aesthetics. Like stated before, not everyone is gonna be a David Haye or Roy Jones etc etc.

While a fighter should be in their tip top shape, it dosent mean a six pack for all of them.

I remember when Chris Arreola fought Vitali. Dude looked completely out of shape. If you knew nothing about him and passed him on the street you would probably think he would have a heart attack just running a block or two.

But despite getting his ass thrashed pretty badly, his stamina (oddly enough) was not bad at all. He was throwing shots and attempting to land the entire night. He kept moving forward and pressing the action.

While I dont think he was in his best shape for that fight, he certainly proved you dont have to fit the stereotypical mold put on a hard fought, gutsy performance

I agree with guys saying looks aren't important. However; I look at other sports and I don't see an overweight soccer player, overweight basketball player, or fat tennis player. Sure, NFL, but those guys need to be like that and the truth is they are in pretty decent shape throwing all that weight around and pushing mountains of men.

Often wondered that myself. You watch 24/7 etc... and if most boxers who make it to a telecast work half that hard and moderately watch their diet, it shouldn't be a problem... Makes you wonder!:huh

But soccer relies on constant sprinting, stopping, jogging, sprinting, weight isn't beneficial, there also isn't a 200lbs (15 stone - most footballers are about 13.5) weight minimum.

For a HW weight (unless it's too much for your body) is beneficial, for all those other sports, which rely on physical speed much more in the sense of being able to run and turn as fast as possible, it would be detrimental.

True. And a lot of times it's "good enough" instead of optimal condition. But that doesn't mean they aren't in shape. On the other hand, a lot of guys can be physically ripped and not in great condition or have series stamina problems.

Eating way more calories than expending. Unhealty and fattening foods are everywhere and some people can't resist them. Training is hard work and takes focus and dedication. It's also about how you were conditioned as a youngster. Do you see exercise as something fun or a chore.
