arguments for larry holmes being super over rated or under rated...which do u pick?

    Holmes had probably the best jab ever and a great chin. Holmes fought with a mean streak and never ducked anybody. Also, Holmes beat like 8 world champions. Those Spinks fights could have easily gone his way ( the second was a clear robbery).

    thats why
    he just managed not to fight the 5 out 6 best guys in this era

    and the one he did fight
    he really didnt even win
    and never gave a rematch

    Probably underrated, but he could've fought Page and Thomas, and unified the belt.

    Anyone can have their resume picked apart and sure there are holes (maybe a few) in Holmes resume but when it just comes down to watching the guy on film (in his more impressive fights) the guy was pure class - he was a great fighter in my opinion and impresses me loads when he does his best stuff

    He could have unified WBC and WBA. He could have fought Dokes/Page/Coetzee/etc to clean his division. But, to be fair, Holmes dominated from 1979 to 1985 and beat a lot of contenders (most were weak or green, though).

    I rank him #5.

    so PLEASE tell how he dominated from 1979-1985
    when he did not fight the best heavys of that period

    avoiding the best is not a method of dominace

    dokes,thomas,page,coetzee,witherspoon rematch
    yeah he really dominated
    by not fighting them

    just watch the super 6 now
    when the best fight the best
    guess almost everone loses

    Holmes did fight a disturbing number of novices (6 of his challengers had 16 pro fights or less).

    He certainly cherry-picked, and he was quite open about that. He plucked guys out of nowhere, Apollo Creed style. Scott Frank, Lucien Rodriguez etc. In 1985 he was suggesting Kip Kane as a potential challenger. Kip who ? exactly.
