Tyson was meant to fight Donovan Ruddock. After Mike had his bout of 'flu' a so called easier opponent was wanted. Slight miscalculation !

Whether Buster Douglas was or wasn't particularly highly regarded is unimportant in the big scheme of things by virtue of how he treated Mike Tyson IMO.

Leon Spinks. Was 6-0-1 going into his first fight with Ali and surprisingly won. Just a few years later he wasn't considered much of a threat and now is seen as a person who was used as a punching bag for the upper class fighters.

Buster Douglas is a bad cal .. He was dominating the then undefeated and highly regarded Tony Tucker before, fizzing out and basicaly quitting.. Also schooled Mccall, educated fans regarded him as a talented underachieer(no HEART).. Most of the reson he was a hughe underdog is because of how dominant and highly regarded Tyson was at the time... Who was the last HW to be widely recognized as number 1 pfp, and was already being compared to Ali,Louis etc as the greatest hw ever.

Guys who were journeyman or not even considered so legit contenders?
Billy Backus,Luis Santana,Morris East,Alfredo Layne probably forgetting some.. Arturo Frias also was a late sub and came out of nowhere to win a tltle.
