The only two worth mentioning in the same sentence are Hopkins and Jones Jr. Jones would be the tougher fight of the two, both guys would have KO power, both immense speed, but Robinson had a great chin. I know Jones was naturally a lot bigger, but we're talking Robinson, on modern supplements and training methods, Robinson beats him at middleweight.
How does anyone on this forum know whether SRR would've won/lost any fights should he of been from this era??? The man fought in the 40's and 50's mainly. Humans have evolved further, science etc... is ten times more advanced. Christ for all we know he could've been 0-40!!!
Robinson had almost 100 fights at welterweight before moving up to middleweight. If he started his career in 2000, he'd have swept out all the modern welterweights before moving up and sweeping out the middles. Carl Froch and RJJ would never have been in his weight class. And Carl Froch is an absurd selection anyway. And the 160-pound Roy never beats 160-pound SRR either. He had similar physical tools and talents, but Roy wasn't ever as tough as SRR.
If this were basketball you'd have a point, but the great thing about boxing is the weight classes. Their all the same size (except heavies) so there's no clear physical advantage for the modern guys over the old ones. And on top of that, boxing (the craft itself) hasn't changed. A master is a master regardless of era. Hopefully you learned something today. Same goes for the nutjob who suggests he might be 0-40 because of science.
I didn't say he WOULD, I said he COULD now I don't know what school you went to or for that matter whether you actually went to school but there is a difference. Take running for example. 100m world record 1945 - 10.23 sec. 100m world record 2011 - 9.78 sec. That isn't chance lad!
I love irony......I don't know what school you went to, but look up the phrase "might be" and see what you find. :-( It's not running either son. Ridiculous analogy.
How is it? Look at various forms of sport. Shot put, Javelin, High jump, long jump, football etc... Elite athletes and/or teams from the 40's wouldn't stand a chance against the elite of today. Simple.
I somewhat agree with you.. Can't compare fighters from the past with todays crop. Most "fantasy" fights ppl bring up, I usually pick today's fighters. Athletics now are bigger, stronger, faster, smarter, etc. You think Wilt Chamberlain will average 50+ppg in todays era? Hell no Or Oscar Robertson getting triple doubles every night? Highly unlikely The point i'm making here is everyone (including HOFer themselves) need to lay off the coulda woulda yada BS. Respect the past for laying the foundation. TC
If Robinson fought today, he'd probably start at 130lbs and stay there for a few years, remember these days fighters drain to make weight, so Robinson would compete at lower weight classes and he started his career at 132 as it was. He'd go up in weight much the same as Mayweather and they'd clash, Robinson wins but it would be a good match and there maybe a rematch. Mayweather probably stays at 135-140 after getting the worse of it as he only went up in weight. Mayweather-Pacquaio may well happen at this weight, Floyd not worried about his zero and not being the same draw, looking for the biggest money fight available Robinson would probably go up in weight looking for a super fight with Delahoya beating everyone in his path pretty easily. Robinson like Mayweather wouldn't fight for Arum, he's be self managed so he may not fight Arum fighters, he also wouldn't fight top contenders unless paid top dollar. If he beats DLH before Hopkins loses to Taylor we'd likely see that as a super fight, if not he never fights Hopkins. He would fight Hopkins or Taylor weighing around 156, while they would enter the ring at 172lbs, he would beat either imo and then go back down to 154 or 147 because 160 would be dead, he'd fight in the division which offered the fights paying the most until 2012, which would be his first retirement before coming back after his prime There is no chance he goes to 168/175 in this era, because todays 168/175 fighters weigh 180-190lbs, that would be like Robinson going to HW in his own time, he's too small
He'd be 40-0. He was a natural welter and never a natural middleweight. There was no light middleweight division back then and in this new era he may never have fought at middle and I can't see anyone since 2000 that could beat SRR at welter and light middle. Even if he had fought at middle by that time, Hopkins would have been a light heavy, as would Jones and SRR would not go as high as supermiddle and even if he did Calzaghe is the only fighter who has a chance and even then I'd favour SRR.
