Boxers who may not have the best resumes... Maybe not even the best ability.. But who just is/was so tough to beat at fight night.. I'll start with a few: Vitali Klitschko Joe Calzaghe Andre Ward Thomas Hearns
Calzaghe would've been easy meat for a peak counterpuncher. Someone with such poor punching technique and poor defence would've got picked apart and beaten comfortably by a top class prime counterpuncher, that's why he never fought a prime version of Hopkins. Jones and Toney would've beaten him with straight right hands as well, and I'd back fast, energetic guys with some technique like Ward and Dirrell to beat him as well. Good technique, defence and accuracy beat a workrate-oriented volume puncher 9 times out of 10. Just because Calzaghe never fought guys as good as these doesn't mean he would've been a nightmare for them. He wouldn't. His flurrying style and lack of head movement would've been perfect for them.
How the **** does he fit in here. Guy had the best ability and one of the best resumes of the last 25 years.
How does Tommy Hearns not have the best resume or ability?? :huh He was one of the best of the modern era in both regards.
Hence why he was so hard to beat H2H? I didn't think a poor resume/ability was a requirement for this thread?, I mean Tommy Hearns is given as an example by the TS :huh
I said MAYBE not even the best ability or resume.. Example.. Vitali doesnt have near the resume Wlad does, but he was a far tougher opponent in his prime than Wlad is.. Joe Calzaghe (even through you disagree) didnt have that much ability.. He had inhuman stamina, a strong will and toughness...
So if you remove that stipulation the TS made in his opening post, isn't this just a thread about who the best fighters ever are then? :huh
Mostly when people talk about the best fighters ever, they pick the ones with the best resumes... You will never hear names like Calzaghe or Vitali in debates about greatness, but they are some of the best H2H fighters in history. IMO...
I don't agree with this assessment, but a lot of folks I respect say that Khaosai Galaxy H2H would have beaten any 115 pounder in history. Of current guys, Nkosinathi Joyi is a head to head nightmare. I think he would have even given prime Finito major problems. Vitali is obviously also much higher head to head than he is based on resume.
