Better fighter: Tszyu (MA Gonzalez fight, '99) or Calzaghe (Lacy fight, '06)?

    Which of these two guys do you feel had the better skillset/better ability, and was the more effective fighter overall? :bbb

    I was at the Calzaghe fight and to be honest I always thought lacy was there for the taking , his biggest win was against Pemberton and an old Reid.

    Tszyu fight was much more two elite fighters going at it.

    Damn, I haven't noticed just how strong Tszyu was in the ring until taking a closer look at that fight.

    Calzaghe had a long reign as champ at 168 so I gave him the nod over Tszyu.... while Slappy's style was effective, it is the gayest I've ever seen in a boxing ring. For that I never have been, nor will I ever be a fan.

    Tszyu had a long reign as well though, no?

    And how does a long reign answer the question of who was the better fighter ability-wise at their peaks anyway? :huh

    Sven Ottke was a world champion continuously for 6 years, does that make him a better fighter ability-wise than anyone who didn't have a comparable length of reign?

    No fan of the slappy style myself but up till 98/99 calzahge was a very heavy handed fighter who would have went on to have an impressive KO record - he was cursed with very brittle hands and had to tailor his style to compensate - I could never rate a fighter with only domestic dominance as an ATG top ten but haters should acknowledge he was one hell of a boxer.

    No shame in being second to either of these two. I'd pick Calzaghe pesonaly. Boy could he punch in his 20's.

    Kostya Tszyu with 16oz gloves would hit harder than prime Joe Calzaghe with bare hands. Power-wise, this is a ****ing landslide.

    p4p KT would smash up Calslappy in a brutal manner. Can you imagine KT launching those deadly rights hands in between those wide winging punches?

    Calzaghe isn't even a special fighter. He was a protected fighter who stayed in Europe and avoided the tough guys until they got old, then had the good luck to run into Lacy and we all know what Lacy is about now. Total fraud.

    Two very different points, Tszyu was more skilled, Calzaghe more effective. It is effectiveness, ie. the ability to effect a win against an opponent regardless of how you look in doing so, that is most important; because ultimately its all about the W whatever your stlye. Popkins, I think you consistently underrate JC's effectiveness (like your mate Dinamata, or are you him? i forget), writing him off as a stamina machine...but so what if he is? If stamina is what wins him fights, its as effective a method of winning as a kayo merchant. :good
