Brit on Brit action. Let's get the Cockell of the Farr or Marciano performance. And let's take Hide from his pre-Bowe HW campaign. Hide could hit, and Cockell seemed a bit inconsistent in his durability. Then again, Hide would go down faster than a Sunday hooker.

Cockell couldn't knock a sick infant off a potty seat. I like haye by TKO in mid rounds

im sorry but I dont see hide beat a good lastarza. cockell always had talent but he found a beter chin as a heavyweight, even so he beat good name fighters like marshall, Tommy farr and barone.

Lastaza, kid mathews, johny willams were rated heavyweights when cockell beat them. who the hell did hide beat at real world level? 11-1 Bent?

Hide suprised Bowe (in a losing fight!) but until the bent fight hed only beat up on over matched part time journeymen. The Tucker win looks good until you realise how far gone Tony was by then - in worse shape than tommy farr was when cockell beat him!

If cockell's only big win was tommy farr you could say he never beat anyone but he did beat the right contenders to get his shot at the real title. Any heavyweigt who beat lastarza, mathews and williams was worthy of a shot. Hide never could have done the equivelent in his era under the same system. Hide would have to have beat 3 fighters of the level of mercer, morrison, carl williams, joe hipp or bert cooper to match cockells worth as a contender. he never did this so in my eye hide does not make the comparison.

Lastarza was washed up when Cockell beat him. The Lastarza of the Marciano fights wins a wide decision over Don.

You must make allowance for the fact that the heavyweights Hide fought were in the 220 lb range, while guys like Matthews and LaStarza were 180. So, you can say fighter A beat ranked fighters and fighter B did not, but they essentially fought in two different divisions.

Furthermore, Farr was at the very end of his run, in his last fight, 40 years old and with 30 losses. LaStarza was grinding down from a career where his highlights were a decent showing losing against a younger Rock and a victory over Layne. Sorry, he just doesn't impress me as a top tier heavyweight... not that Hide beat any of these himself.

lastarza was half a pound lighter against cockell than he was against rex layne 12 months earlier, his best win!

lastarza had only suffered one concusion (that he got a 6 month rest from) and was still only 27 years old with a winning record of 53-4. He was not washed up.

lastarza, charles and bucceroni were the best contenders that year, an established contender with a win against either would land a title shot that year.

Marciano had 25 fights, Lastarza 37.

Still, my point is, regardless of Lastarza's age, his best performance may be in a loss to a quite green Marciano.

LaStarza was an excellent but protected fighter. His skills and talent wree indisputable but his dedication and mindset was questioned. In addition to Layne, Brion and Bucceroni were good wins. He was game for Maricano but got ruined in their rematch. I mean in he had bone fragments shattered in his arms, clealry he was done when Cockell beat him.

At any rate, Cockell did do more at HW than Hide but he's probably losing this one. A repeat of the Valdes loss I'd say.

Coming off extensive nose surgery and a long layoff it wasn't exactly the Rock's sharpest performance. Marciano was prone to sometimes fighting down to his competition anyway.

Hide was fragile but he was an offensive force and an all time great puncher, Cockell wouldn't be able to hold him off.

I'll pick Hide of 1994 to beat a '52 to '55 Cockell at 200 pounds or less.... That's provided Hide doesn't get tagged by ****'s Sunday shot....

"Herbert Hide & Roger Mayweather" have two of boxing's all-time worst chins....

cockell was a good boxer and tough, he took some bombs from Marciano that would have levelled a lot of fighters. Marciano and cockell made each other look bad. Rocky was beter than he looked against cockell and don was beter than he looked against rocky.

Herbie had talent but his record was totally manufactured. his punch is over rated, he wasn’t knocking out fighters who had not been knocked out before - that’s how I assess an all time great puncher.
