Yeah, lets not consider guys just because they came from a lower weightclass. Trinidad was at least a fully fledged 154 lber when he fought Hopkins. Skill was the deciding factor in that one.

And lets not forget that the 160 lb De La Hoya very nearly beat Sturm. I favoured Sturm slightly but it was close and competitive throughout.

 

A really good small Hoya ALMOST beat a very mediocre bigger Sturm.

A natural 175 with extreme discipline meeting a "fully fledged 154"....... nah.... Especially not when Trinidad relied a lot on power... if he was pure technique like a Martinez, but as much as Trinidad relied on power.... it was as much a bigger problem facing a much stronger and bigger fighter in Hopkins.

The trinidad win is almost worthless imo. The Tarver win an the Pavlik win are two good wins.

Just because you personally don't recognize those names - and I'm not surprised by that - doesn't mean they weren't good fighters. Echols, Ikeki, Eastman would be 50/50 at least with Martinez and Echols would be a favorite over him. That era was better than this one. Those guys I listed were tough top 10 middleweights and they're not his only notable wins. Joppy beat them consistently. Trinidad blew Joppy up like a monster. Trini was def a MW.
