By the same token, Cockell had been KO'd before the Marciano fight and it took uncountable haymakers from the Rock to put Cockell out. It may be Marciano's weakest filmed performance.
Lastarza got ruined by Marciano. Lastarza was a protected fighter, but had serious talent. At his best, he would have outclassed cockell.
Cockell fought the fight of his life against Marciano, and still got killed. He fought like Sosnowski against Vitali, just the unwillingness to go down and give up until he physically couldn't take it anymore. The chance of a lifetime, and they are going to go out on their shield. Cockell was fighting for his whole country, and fought bravely. In Marciano's biography he said "Everyone knows this guys a bum, Im going to knock him out. What's the point of training hard?" But for training for the Archie Moore fight, Rocky said "This could be my toughest fight. I'm going to really get myself up for this one"
-As already pointed, Marciano didn't take Cockell seriously and fought down to his level. The only other half way decent HW punchers he fought, Slade and Valdez, made easy work of him. These results are much more telling of his ability to handle punchers than one inspired night against a layoff lethargic Marciano. -Hide's power put Bentt into a 4 day coma, ended his career, and nearly killed him. Tell him how Hide's power is overrated. Bentt's only other stoppage loss was his Pro debut, and he had just most famously stood up to Tommy Morrison's first round bombs. Hide had some of the best punching technique I've seen, and this has also been observed by actual people in the sport. You can knock Hide all you want for his weak resume, fragile mentality, but the man could punch. Punch better than Slade and Valdez, for sure.
Yes hide had world class power but a lot of decent fighters have world class power but they can only catch mid level fighters with it. Hide never knocked out a genuine world class fighter so he was not an ATG puncher. Bent was a decent 11-1 fighter who got lucky, he was not world class.
maybe, maybe not entirely. At only 27 lastarza was still had much to offer and was worthy of his high rating only months after the marciano fight. cockell still beat 3 more world rated heavyweights than Hide ever did. Hide did not make the grade.
Hide would have destroyed johnny paycheck, frank scott, dave zigglewich, richard dunn maybe avangelista..................but not don cockell. cockell was a genuine contender, Hide never beat any of those.
The Cockel of the Marciano fight got slaughtered but he showed a lot of heart. I guess it depends on how motivated Cockel is...I am not so impressed with Hide he went down pretty easy against Vitali and it did not look like a solid punch...he did beat Bent who beat Morrison. Hide should have the skill to beat Cockel but a determined Don could win this as well ...this would not be an easy fight
