who has this gone from the op to the final years of lewis's career?

let's be clear here, byrd and ruiz were never top contenders during lewis's reign.

    the number one contender flowed as such lewis (95-98) -> holyfield (99) -> tyson (2000) -> wlad (2001-2002) -> vitali (2003).

from 99 onwards lewis was the champ apart from the night he lost to rahman (which he'd later avenge).

so basically lewis has beaten every number contender from 95 onwards apart from wlad. he also beat holyfield and rahman who were both the top hevayweights in the world when he beat them.

now when vitali was champ, byrd and ruiz were actually his top two contenders, but he didn't face any of them.

but back to the ts, nah wlad>vitali mos def

How did Lewis not owe Vitali a rematch?

Were you not entertained in the fight?

Boxing is entertainment, this is a fight that is still talked about today and will continued to be talked about for a long time to come.

The rematch I imagine would have garnered a PPV showdown which would have been a bigger event than the former.

If I was Lewis I would've done the same thing. He had a very real chance of losing and that would have hurt his legacy tremendously.

Of course Lewis owed Vitali a rematch.

I'm just curious why Lewis didn't fight Wlad when Wlad was his mandatory for

a challenger that beats a champion owes the champion a rematch to prove it was no fluke, a champion that wins does not owe a challenger a rematch.

From what I read Ring mag had Byrd at two and three.....yep he dodged them.
I can remember reading in a newspaper back when that was 'live' it was too boring said Lewis and tossed belt.

Well coming from the one and only days...I didn't have much respect for belts as was.... But the Champ certainly had less respect than me.

Of course he dodged them....He would not have dumped the belts if he hadn't. Not worth his valuable time....and more crap later by Klitchko haters....his legacy...What Legacy...he refused to fight his manditories, throwing away his belts....He took a fortune to stand aside....what short of Champion...stands aside?
Later for big money my ass. Some one who is not sure he can beat Tyson, takes the big sure now money to stand aside....some one who is not a Champion or future champ in his own mind.

No wonder he could say those guys are boring....and toss the belt.

He was not the Champion of the World.....he was nothing but a belt holder. A champion fights his manditories. A Champion fights top rated fighters boring or not.

What would you call Wlad if he **** canned one of his belts because he had to fight Pov what ever his name is...the one who decided with 28- or so fights he was not ready for Wlad. He's boring, I don't need to fight him.

It comes out a decade later Stewart said, Byrd is dangerous to you Lewis. And then Lewis **** cans the belt........you are willingly blind.
If I am champion, I beat them all up, The good, The boring and make them Ugly.

Then when Byrd was champ and worth more money. I can remember Byrd calling out everyone with a belt....was that not the second dodging of Lewis of Byrd?

What ever you can say about Byrd, Dodge was not part of his vocabulary like Lennox 'Dodge' Lewis.
How can you even in your worst nightmare, think Lewis had a Legacy, any more than Holms who refused to Unify and his Kiddy Parade.

    Well stated.

Especially, especially when the challenger was not a mandatory in the first place.

Bryd was clearly boring in that time he was the mandatory challenger. His style would make any fighters look bad in which is why Steward didn't want Lewis to fight with. It doesn't mean Steward believe Bryd will beat Lewis. It just style wise it be boring and it wouldn't bring big money for Lewis in which Steward knows that. I don't think hbo was even rushing Lewis to fight Bryd. Even hbo knows Lewis vs Bryd would be a boring fight. And lets be real here people If Lewis fought Bryd, it would have been an easy victory for Lewis in which he will use his height and reach to bother Bryd badly. Bryd won't take a chance in which Bryd will run, run like the wind blew. Lewis vs Bryd would easily be like Wlad vs Iggy.

When vitali was champ, byrd was his number 1 contender. He should have fought byrd definitely.

Lewis should have fought wlad instead of rahman imo

Vitali Klitschko is by far the most overrated fighter even known. All the guy is known for...is getting his arse handed to him by Lennox Lewis.
This thread proves it. Thats all his nuthuggers can talk about. His "mythical" victory over a man was on his way to retirement

Why would Lennox duck someone like Byrd? and John ****ing Ruiz? who cares if Byrd is a southpaw....that means hed be eating LL's overhand right all night long.

    LL would "Golota" Wladmir Klitsckho....

    LL>Byrd>Vitali Klitscko>Wladmir Klitscko>Haye>Ruiz

Steward "He [Lennox] told me that Vitali hurt him in that fight pretty bad and that he didn't want to have to face him again. I told him that if he wanted to continue fighting at all, that he would have to give Vitali a rematch. He chose to retire."

Steward says a lot of things. Id taken anything he says with a pinch of salt.

Id rather look at fighters themselves and compare them
