moorer could outbox Bonavena though. Bonavena was so crude and not sharp at all with his punches. He relied on wearing people down basically. Maybe he could wear Moorer down but moorer for me would be able to competitively decision him with the jab i think.
The punch that floored Frazier and the one that buckled Ali's knees and badly staggered him in round 9 are the two blasts that keep entering my mind because either one would stretch Moorer for the count, imo. I can't see MM surviving Oscar's big shots. And he WOULD get hit by them.
Moorer's punch resistance compared to Ali and Frazier is practically zero..this is what would fail him vs Bonavena. oscar was ungainly, clumsy, awkward, etc., but he was tough as hell and he could punch...and at some time ....inevitably, he would have cracked that glass chin of Moorer's.
Read pages 47-51. This is Jose Torres' account of what Oscar Bonavena was like. It's pretty vivid: http://books.google.com/books?id=EN...&resnum=1&ved=0CBUQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false
thnks for that Surf-Bat...haven't read that in years..Bonavena was kinda freaky in a way..so unpredictable..but I disagree with Torres on a couple of points...one was ..he was a little off..the two kds in Bonavena-frazier I were in the 2nd round, not the fourth..maybe a typo...and i don't think Frazier ever had Oscar in danger of going down in the rematch..much less had him in danger of a stoppage. oscar's strategy was to put his back against the ropes and plant his elbows at his stomach and his gloves protecting his face..and he finished stronger than Joe as Torres says. All this adds up to oscar being to strong and dangerous for the chinny Moorer.
No problem:smoke I guess in the pre-youtube, pre-VCR days one had to rely on the ever-fallible memory. That seems to be what Mr. Torres did. And we all know from his verbal exchanges with Ali that Oscar knew many more words of English than the two Torres credits him with. Like "OK, go 'head. You poonch me now!"
i honestly don't see much evidence as to Bonavena being some power puncher knockout artist guy... he wears people down rather then having this explosive punch. Moorer is a much better technician and was more proven in my opinion
1 guy fought a lot of fighters that had a history of being stopped. The other fought guys that were very difficult to stop. You think Moorer gets ko's fighting that set of chins?
