To be honest, I'm surprised how many youngsters don't know the song 'The Black Velvet Band'.

At the end of the day it's great folk song. Love it!!

PS despite popular opinion, every folk song ever written in the world, does not belong to Ireland.

  4. You're surprised that not many youngsters have heard of a folk song?

    I'm 37 and I don't know any folk songs.

True but the fact that the opening line of this particular song says "In a neat little town they called Belfast..." and goes onto mention the Broadway area of north Belfast would indicate that it's an Irish song..

Never underestimate meaty Mick. The tale of tape would tell the story but it wasn't long enough.

Ha, ha fair point. That's me totally stumped.

I think there are different lyrics to the same tune though (like there is with a lot of folk tunes), depending from area to area.

Still, those ('In a neat little town they called Belfast...') are by far, far easily the most well known and an Irish folk tune it is, fully accepted!! It's a great song anyway, really like it.
