But it's happening again. Think about it: Wlad never relinquished the WBA crown but it will still be given to Povetkin-Chagaev winner. The dreadful times will be repeated again and again as Wlad will be knocking out one champion after another, until the champions start ducking him. There is no way WBA can make them fight each other, considering the 18 month window and sicknesses and contractual disputes. And how can you explain what happened to Gamboa?
It's amazing what an FBI investigation can do to make an organization run smoothly Here is hoping the other 3 get investigated as well!
That's because Vladimir is now the WBA "Super" champion and thus the regular title immediately becomes vacant. I remember when they introduced that. What a dire ****ing sham and a blatant excuse for a sanctioning fee. It's disgraceful. Fighters don't mind though as they get paid more if a title is on the line. As for Gamboa likewise he is also a Super champ. What id like to know is what happens when a Super champ and a regular champ meet. Does the winner become a super duper champ?
The thing is, he is not even a super champ, they gave him a unified champ status, which was largely unused up until now and no one has a clear understanding of the conditions and duties that come with the title. Basically, in WBA there will never be a top dog, a strongest fighter. There will always be 3 of them, thus a chaotic factor is introduced to an already confusing ranking system. When Povetkin becomes champ, he will continue avoiding Wlad, and arguments will be made that Wlad is NOT the man at the weight. This is simply disgusting. In an odd chance that Povetkin would sign to fight Klitschko, the belt would once again become vacant, allowing corrupt promoters to get their protected fighters in.
Oh and you're a little behind times on Gamboa. He was stripped of the Super Champ status for no reason whatsoever. Currently the super champ is Chris John.
Really? How on earth can the WBA strip one champ of their "Super Champ" status and hand that to another fighter? A few years back when Barrera and co were in their prime these titles were largely ignored. Was a good time to be a boxing fan... Here's an interesting scenario. When Sven Ottke held the IBF he unified the WBA by beating Byron Mitchell and was elevated to Super Champ making the WBA vacant. Mundine went on to win the belt. Had Calzaghe fought Mundine back then, which was a fight being mooted ( bear in mind Joe held the WBO ) would that have meant two Super Champs in one division? Not sure what the WBA's stipulation is on this but the Super Champ bull**** is clearly something they haven't given much thought other than gaining another sanctioning fee.
More along those lines, think of Felix Sturm. He has a Super Champion status but he NEVER UNIFIED So the guy had one belt but since Genadi Golovkin brought a lot of money to the table they promoted Sturm to super and gave Golovkin the regular :rofl WBA are utter scam artists that are leeching the life out of boxing.
Good points. And one of the reasons why i pay very little attention to the WBA title. That said i don't pay much attention to any of them. Although like you say currently i lay significant blame at the WBA door's for the mess we see today.
The problem with boxing is that the "organizations" are separated from the promoters. In MMA, like the UFC, a promotion has its own belts.
Actually, it would be dramatically less than now. There would only be 4 levels of champions: World Champion - Only one of these, winner of the Intercon vs. World Champ. Intercontinental Champion - Only one of these, winner of the Regional Tourney. Regional Champion - N. America, UK, Europe, Latin.. determined by annual tourney of National Champions in each Region National Champion - US, British, Cuban, etc..determined by annual tourneys in each Country.
That's not any better at all. Look at the disparity in salarys between the UFC and Boxing. It's not even close. Why? Because the UFC calls ALL the shots. That's not sensible.
