"Martin Conroy and John Stokes are through to the quarter-finals of the AIBA World Junior Championships following wins over Scotland and Egypt today.

Conroy beat Amir Elsaey of Egypt 23-5 and Stokes beat Scotland's Samuel Ball 9-6 in Astana, Kazakhstan. But John Nevin bowed out despite a brave performance against Kumar Naveen of India this afternoon.

Conroy, a bronze medal winner at the 2011 European Junior Championships, was outstanding and picked his punches perfectly in the 1st round to lead 6-1.

The Egyptian came out fighting in the second frame, but Conroy counter-punched his way into a 13-3 lead.

The Ballyhaunis BC ace then picked off some beautiful counter-punches in the third, mostly with his back hand, to record a comprehensive 23-5 victory.

Stokes and Ball shared the first frame 1-1. However, the young Dubliner upped his game in the second, using his counter punching skills to command a 6-3 advantage at the bell.

The Scottish boxer came storming forward in round three, but Stokes maintained his composure to pick his shots cleanly en route to a well deserved win.

Nevin, also a bronze medal winner at the 2011 European Juniors, found himself 4-1 behind after the first in a bout that was 50-50.

He threw more punches in the second and third to try an put his opponent under pressure and did appear to have some success. Unfortunately, the scores did not reflect his endeavours."

Conroy and Stokes will now meet German and Russian opponents tomorrow. If both boxers win then Ireland will be guaranteed at least two brozne medals in Astana."
I really believe Martin can do it and Stokes has a tough one with a Russian.Good luck, lads.

I think this is a 50/50 fight and I think carl has the ability to win it, but even if he did lose, it would be particularly damaging to his career imo. He only would have had ten fights and hes young enough to come back.

I think it is too risky a fight for Carl at this stage, especially after the Turley performance, I am not saying he cant beat Kiko, because he has the ability to do it.

But I would have preferred Carl to get more experience first, he could have fought the other Irish lads i.e. Hyland, Big Bang etc or maybe another good tough import. I would have preferred another 2 or 3 test before I put him in with the likes of Kiko.

Even if he beats Kiko, his next fights are at Euro level, too much too soon imo.

If he beats Kiko he'll take a step back. I imagine it isn't ideal to be fighting Kiko this soon but the opportunity is there now and it may not come around for a long time so I guess they believe it's worth the risk.

If he wins, he'll take a step back fighting the likes of Hyland and Casey.

Just because Dunne ****ed up the night of that fight doesn't mean Martinez is there for the taking in 5 rounds. Madness!

Its a risky fight for Carlos. I think his team wouldnt put him in with Kiko if he wasnt ready for him. Just hope that they get onto Jason Booth for a bit of info on how Kiko was in the last fight. Maybe Booth will help in the sparring in some way if he is available.
Also I think for Carl he could be the type of fighter that steps up another level when he is in with a banger like Kiko he would of seen some of Kikos wins over the years. Box him in the early rounds and see what happens in the latter rounds. It will also be a test for Carls chin and if he can take a shot. I think it will be a great night up in Belfast.

Lads would there be any buses put on for the fight going from Dublin up to Belfast? If so I would be interested in going up. I cant afford to stay in Belfast over night but will be able to scrape the money for a cheap ticket. I know when ever Dunne was fighting in the o2 there were a lot of buses came to Dublin from all over the country.

You can look at it a couple of ways.

Long story short I think regardless of the outcome his next fights are going to be against the likes of Casey or Hyland. Both are fights he wins. Whether he does that as EBU champion or a young contender swiftly trying to bounce back from a loss is what we all have to wait and see.

As for the Martinez improving as a boxer lately. Meh. If I took up juggling this minute I'd be a better juggler tomorrow than I was today. It wouldn't mean I was good at it.

The main factors in this will be

    1) Carlos not letting the occasion get to him. He doesn't seem the type to. In fact he seemed to really enjoy headling his shows. I don't think he will but for the sake of objectivity you'd have to mention the possibility of the 24 year old with just 11 fights getting nervous on the night.

    2) A good gameplan from Storey, McGuigan and company. And Carlos needs to stick to it. Dunne ended up looking out of his earhole because of his slack approach. If Carlos is asked to do stuff he doesn't think is the best plan or isn't the most comfortable with he needs to suck up his pride and get on with the job. Older wiser men will set the gameplan for him while he's still learning his trade and he needs to follow their advice.

    3) His ring generalship. He's got the goods but having ability and bringing it to the fore on the big occasion are two very seperate things. He's got to be able to put it together. Despite winning handily over Turley we all know he didn't look great. He can't be snatchy with this performance. It needs to be measured. He went looking for the KO against Turley. When he didn't get it early it made him want even more as the fight went on as if to make up for not getting it done quickly. Like a gambler chasing his losses.

He needs to not get drawn in and get caught with any big wallops he doesn't see coming. Stick to the plan, use his superior speed and technical ability. Not let pride or machismo take over if he gets buzzed or worse.

An EBU champion in a hot division after just 11 fights would be something quite special. I know Casey did it but he didn't beat a champion or a fighter who has been at world level.

I can't wait for this now :bbb

Paul Hyland will fight the winner im guessing, i know there are apparently no options for this fight but thats not to mean that there isnt an agreement for Carl to fight Hyland if he wins and Kiko likewise id say a double euro card featuring the Hyland boys is on the cards in Dublin before the end of the year.
For what its worth i dont think kiko is anything special but is tough and experienced and i can see a points win for the Jackal for this one.
Its what he is going to do after that that worries me.

Sorry Bam Bam should have clarified after the Hyland defence he would be at a very high level very fast and with just 2 or 3 defences (all going well)he will be be getting pushed to go for world title shot and it would be hard for him to resist if one of the champions made him an offer.
it would look good for them aswell fighting th euro champ easy to sell and all that.
But we are getting carried away and sept 10 first.:good

Kiko, Hyland, Casey, Munroe. All do-able, all should sell and a decent body of work. I agree Kiko is a big challenge, but think he is dangerous in the early rounds and if Carl can box smart a points decision should be possible. By the time he has worked his way through this grouping Hatton Promotions will quite possible have a world title shot lined up for Scott Quigg and the clash of the two young hot propertys could become a natural.

Jesus lads go handy the young lad has just got a shot at a dangerous european champion after 10 figts and yous are already selling tickets to his next three defences.
Lets just see what happens in september first, Kiko is one dangerous dude but i think if Carl can get past the first 4 rounds and take the sting out of the spainards attacks then his natural boxing abilities will take over and see him home, after that who cares we will have another eruo champion on this small island of ours.:happy

It looks like greenjab will be running a return bus to Belfast and also an over night if there is enough interest.
