Hagler was a national AAU champion although his amateur career was relatively short. His record is reported as 52-2.
rocky marciano didn't have much amateur experience. glen johnson didn't have many amateur fights. anyone one know arturo gatti's amateur career?
urghhhh can somebody please tell me why australians hold mundine in such high regard???? really i know for a fact if we had a fighter like that in england we would not stand up for him, see david haye once he was found out
You have high standards, TS, if you feel 54 fights is "relatively short". It pales in comparison to the professional amateurs from Eastern Europe 'n Cuba, but more than enough to prepare him for the pros.
Sanchez had only a handful, but fought like he had 400 amatuer fights. He definitely broke the mold for Mexican fighters along with Miguel Canto.
it looks like archie moore didn't have much amateur experience. Dwight Muhammad Qawi also didn't have any amateur experience, and ken norton had less than 30 amateur fights. tim witherspoon also didn't have too many amateur fights.
Laila Ali... no amateur experience she turned out to be the most dominant fighter in SuperMids and Lt. Heavyweights. Styled more of a Puncher than a boxer/puncher like her dad. But she did have his 1-2 punch, with her 2 as a sledgehammer... She eventually turned out to be a spectacular body puncher also, getting stoppages by her body attacks... The only woman ive ever seen that REALLY punches like a man... Her punches were effective enough to inflict facial damage/bleeding in 2-3 rounds (women rounds are only 2min) The only notable fighter she didnt fight was Anne Wolfe. She did call her out a good few times in post-fight interviews, but Wolfe never rose to the occasion. Which is alright. Wolfe's only loss was against Valerie Mahfood. Coincidentally, Mahfood had been crushed by Laila Ali TWICE in 2 consecutive fights in a row, by TKO stoppages. Even more coincidentally, Wolfe picked up a revenge match with Mahfood 2 months AFTER she had been crushed twice by Ali, winning merely by a UD.... (if you wanna see some good ass-whooping on the women's level, look up both Ali vs Mahfood fights on YouTube. Ali breaks her face up a few times over, including a 50 punch flurry to a tko stoppage) Laila Ali retired in 2007 with a 24 Win, 21KO, 0Loss record, due to lack of competition or unwilling competition....
Marciano #1 on this list considering he had so few amatuer fights, turned pro when he was almost 25, was short and small with stubby arms, considered crude and slow....Goes onto become champ, defends his title numerous times and retires undefeated.
Wilfredo Vazquez Jr none Tito Trinidad only had 50-60 fights or so. I don't think James Toney had a lot of amateur under his belt (can someone verify?)
