I was a bit of a casual fan when Scott won his WBO title. While I saw some of his fights, I dont know much about his opposition (other than McCulloch) or respective performances. Its also hard to find much footage of him fighting. So, can anyone give me the run down (other than the massive nutsack-hanger that is Dunky) on how good Harrison was? Wasted potential? Right guy, right time? Strong opponents or weak sisters? Any YouTube links would be appreciated too.
Grew up watching him i remember watching for first time he fought Patrick Mullings for Commonwealth title and at first just thought who's this fella then??. Mullings well known and Sky never made much fuss of Harrison in build up. He went on to beat Patrick well and then fought Tracy Patterson and from then on i thought ''this guys the goods'' and he proved that as he rampaged through the domestic scene beating good fighters like Richie Wenton, Gary Thornhill (good fighter!) and Steve Robinson as well as beating Tom ''Boom Boom'' Johnson prior to them fights. Scott vs Robinson [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zviXJRLxN2M[/ame] He then fought Juan Pablo Chacon for the full WBO Feathweight title and dominated him and showed his class. Scott was a come forward pressure fighter who was a big big FW and was a very decent boxer. Had cripspness about his punches and didn't mind taking one to give one back. He'd mix from head to body and break his man down. He loved working the body and had nice array of shots. On his night he was a force to be reckoned with but them nights become sporadic towards the end of his career as he'd get involved in stupidity. Loses to Manuel Medina and then stops him in rematch just goes to show when Scott was focused and fit he was class. There was talk of fighting the Mexican's such as MAB and Erik Morales but he never got the chance. His opponents were of decent standard for World Class level. His left hook to body was class!!! I remember when he fought at Braehead and Flower of Scotland was sung. Goosebumps just thinking of it. One of my fav fighters of my childhood. He beat Michael Brodie in one of his defence's of WBO title and stopped him in four. Brodie got caught IIRC with left hook to body and went down. Brodie just been through the Chi wars and wasn't same guy but still Scott did a clinical job. Edit: Scott vs Brodie (Lennon Jnr has shocker ) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJYpgHAFLEk[/ame] I work with a guy who worked with Scott prior to a fight. Was driving him around whilst he was in camp and he said ''i never seen anyone train so ****ing hard! carrying rucksacks on his back and running up mountains!. Ticking timebomb though...sense he wants it to kick off. Got that look about him''.
Probably doing him a bit of an unjustice, but he was basically freakishly big and strong at the weight, bullied his way to a world strap. Also, the Stella gave him super powers :0)
Frank Maloney just before Harrison's interview as they exit ring ''2 England then America!''. That was the plan.. How he made 9 stone!!!...beggars belief.
Scott was a fantastic talent and work extremly hard in the gym to shift the weight. The story with the rucksake is a little OTT we'd put a rucksake on him for the last 800m and kep it on fr his sprints up a steep hill. Scott in my eyes was a big fighting brain, always thinking and usally found the way to grind his opponent down, great guy top drawer!
If I remember rightly didn't he get comprehensively outboxed by Victor Polo, but somehow still got the decision? I'm sure somebody from Scotland will come on and say I was mistaken, but I'm sure that's what happened...
It was given a draw but many felt that he was beaten soundly. He was poor that night and i was shocked when draw was read out. I think it was yet another Jekyll and Hyde display from him.
Chacon ,but he was at is fittest for medina return,he was ill in the changing rooms before the first fight
Harrison was the real deal. One of my favourite domestic champs of all time. Despite being limited man that guy was a tough warrior. He came to fight every single time. The night he beat Chacon for the WBO i wanted to be Scottish that night. It was a dam shame his career succumbed to alcohol as even though he was limited he had a mental toughness and will to win that was second to none. His best wins had to be his rematch with Medina, his destruction of Abelyan Brodie and McCullough.
He was making 9 stone since the age of 15. He came into the ring as high as 147. He was a massive featherweight and it told in his bouts. As he simply brutalised his opposition even though he wasn't much of a puncher.
Yep he was a mother****ing beast! I was watching footage of him as a junior and he's built like a man back then. Guy battered opponents into submission. Like you i was a massive fan of his and it's crying shame it all fell apart so quickly.
What impressed me most about him was despite being an SN fighter he fought a very good quality of opposition despite his limited style. He did nothing exceptionally well. Was a bruising slugger who didn't have much power. But he was extremely tenacious. Im sure he made at least 10 defences or more of the WBO at the time. And mostly against recognised world ranked opposition. He was like the boxing equivalent of Brave Heart in the ring to me
10 defence's in 3 years i believe and as you say against recognized world ranked guys. Stopping 5 of them.
