Ali's wins over Liston: Does he deserve credit for them?

    I dont really credit him for those fights because the outcome of both fights was really dubious. The rematch was obvious fix and the first fight ended prematurely.

    He does deserve credit for surviving in round 5, when for whatever reason his vision was seriously impaired. also he put on a great boxing clinic against an underatted boxer in liston

    we are talking about the Championship Liston right? Not a fight which happened probably 10 years before the Ali fights.

    of coarse ali gets credit,he stayed on his stool in the first fight because ali was beating the **** out of him.

    I feel that if an up and coming fighter is facing a past-prime legend, the way they beat them is vital to the credit they get. Getting by or sloppily pressing against a tired old version of a former great isn't the way to impress, but achieving a victory in a way it was never done before against that man allows your abilities to shine as much, if not more, than the others' apparent declining abilities. Ali certainly performed well enough to earn that credit, completely owning and beating up Liston.

    I don't see how he can not get credit for the first fight.

    You can't exactly argue that Liston won it.

    Of course he does. He employed the perfect style to nullify all of Liston's strengths. History has shown that a fleet footed fast boxer with excellent defensive skills and handspeed can give huge punchers troubles. Corbett did it to Sullivan, Tunney did it to Dempsey, so in hindsight it wasn't all that shocking that Ali did it to Liston and then to Foreman.

    Ali beat him on merit in the first fight and the second was a fix. Definitely deserves 100% credit for the first. The second, whatever.
