I don't like it when a referee counts to 10 when it is clear that the guy is not going to get up. Look at Pettway-Brown. Poor Simon was GONE, instinctively throwing punches in the air. Or Hearns-Shuler. Was Shuler going to be able to get up and be able to fight before the count of 10? The man was unconscious.

Just call it off and get the doctor in there.

If it was your decision Zakman, then Foreman would've been allowed to beat Chuvalo all day long . Not only to ensure your precious 10 count but also to get the ultimate test of the whiskers possible !!

You guys keep talking about the unconscious or temporarily paralyzed guy. I'm also talking about the guy clearly hurt who gets up wobbly, gets up early still hurt who doesn't get a chance to grab until his head clears. Some refs don't give a a full standing 8 count when they should.

I think the referee should give the mandatory 8 count, and then make the decision.

so you want to know if the man that gets knocked down and appears to be out cold manages to get up before the standing eight count should have the fight stopped?if the fighter that gets knocked down is up and responsive by the eight count than the fight can continue and almost every fight i have ever seen has been called this way.your question is a little hard to understand.

So, boxers in the 1800's didn't use gloves. Should we go back to then because "they know what they are signing up for"? Hell, bring in lions and bears under that logic, they know what they are signing up for.

the serious damage that happens to fighters happens when guys don't go down or stay down. And all this would do is compound that risk.

I will say this. There should be a mandatory standing count. Its ****ing bull**** when the ref jumps in and waives a fight off when the guy is on his feet. A classic example of this kind of BS stoppage, was Calzaghe-Manfredo. No doubt Calzaghe would have won, but Manfredo didn't deserve to lose like that.

A standing count would allow the ref to make a more accurate assessment as to whether or not the guy is too hurt too continue. Professional boxers work way too hard to have a fight prematurely stopped, by an overzealous ref.

They should but you know when the guy gets knockout cold and he ain't getting up. When pac knockout hatton, the ref didn't have to count cuz you could see hatton was not getting up.

    read between the lines

    A) fights are stopped too early while no knockdowns have even occurred

    B) should refs count to 10 when a fighter appears to be knocked out cold

if the refs are so overall incompetent and do as stated in A)

then there is no point in even talking about B) because their overall judgemnt is **** anyway

there are too many refs that arent competent, they dont even know how to DQ a person these days....(miranda recent fight)

but for the sake of your question...count to 10.....and in the middle of the count if the dr has waved it off or the trainers are in the ring because he is KTFO, then its all academic...count to 10, so there are no excuses

Well Id go with the refs decision to stop it himself. There are rare cases where a fighter looks like hes not getting up like the Bonsante fight and the fallen fighter pops right up. I thought Maidana was in so much pain he wasnt getting up from the Khan bodyshot, but I think a bodyshot is easier to call a count because they are consious. Especially if a fighter is outmatched and been taking a beating a count is not necessary.
