Ok, maybe you're right. In other words, should the ref be given the right to use his discretion if a fighter is down and almost out, but gets up wobbly or still hurt and wants to continue? Should he just wipe the gloves and give the boxer a chance to recupe by letting it go, stay nearby and then stop the fight.

    Patterson-Johansson I is an example of this. Judah-Millett, Toney-Nunn, Judah-Tszyu.

Hearns-Hagler is the perfect stoppage where a ref uses his discretion, Chavez-Taylor isn't. There are many other fights I could name also.

Yes, a referee should have the discretion, especially if he's perceptive enough to know that a fighter's life is in danger despite his ability to get back up. There should not be a flat out rule. Suppose a fighter gets knocked down and he gets back up, but as a result of KD blow his eye starts hanging out? Let the ref call in the doctor, screw the count. Hell, he should be able to do that whether or not there's a KD.

agreed; but I feel if a fighter gets to his feet, he needs to be allowed to continue.

It's good to use recent fights as examples as they are fresh in people's minds. I could use an older example but why make it harder for everyone to prove a point?

Fights should continue until somebody dies to eliminate any controversy.

What next...stop a fight if a fighter is on the receiving end of a dirty look?

how many times would a fighter come back and win a fight after being in a situation where the referee was willing to stop the fight. if the referee steps in its usually because the fighter cant fight back or has no reasonable chance of winning the fight. as long as the referee's use good judgement i think the current system is fine.

the rule is already in place,a ref has the right to stop the fight at any time he sees fit,if a guy is up by the 5 count but is unsteady on his feet and does not respond to the refs comands by the standing 8 count than he has the right to stop the fight and almost always will.this is a JUDGEMENT CALL and not a set in stone rule, there would really be no way to implement a set in stone rule like that.example in the chavez taylor fight the ref called the fight because even though taylor was up by the 8 count he was not responsive,he asked taylor twice ,are you ok,are you ok.taylor did not answer just stared at the ref, he also never stop resting on the turnbuckle,so by the rules this was a ko victory for chavez.

You're an idiot. Yo are aware the refs already do that 95% of the time? It's when a guys obviously out or in the event of a KO or TKO they generally just stop it. This 'serious question' isn't all that serious in reality.
