Why do people compare old time fighters to modern day fighters when they. . .

    Was the light heavyweight division ever strong?? Hopkins has fought the best available competition though.

    Between 1970 and the mid 80s you had: Bob Foster, Victor Galindez, Chris Finnegan, John Conteh, Jorge Ahumada, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, Yaqui Lopez, Marvin Johnson, Michael Spinks, Eddie Davis, Lottie Mwale, Vonzell Johnson, Murray Sutherland, etc....not to mention some other contenders and decent fighters in that time frame. That's ridiculous :shock:

    With Pascal twice, Calzaghe, Tarver, and now Dawson, no doubt the old man is still willing to fight tough guys and take risks.

    Are any of these better than Hopkins, Tarver or Jones?? Cuz I honestly never heard of them, the only one I ever heard anything good about was Michael Spinks and Bob Foster.

    Just because you never heard of them does not mean they aren't any good.

    It just means maybe you got a little bit to learn about this sport.

    There's a lot of good things about quite a few of those guys. Check em out :good

    You'll probably enjoy their fights more than watching Shumenov, Cleverly, Chris Henry, Mack, etc.

    I'm not doubting boxing may have been big in these countries...but most fights would have been domestic i would have thought as travelling and finding money for travel would have been difficult.

    from the late 1800's to WW2 the "world" champions were at least 90% were soley from N.America...now we have fighters from around the world fighting each other...and these are all full professionals not part-timers which i'm certain alot of these registered boxers were at the time
