Maravilla owns Cotto at either weight. Even if he did manage to pull out a victory at 160, no way does he qualify as an ATG. He's been a A-level fighter in this era, but he doesn't have the resume to be considered an ATG. The title at MW would be his first legit one. All the others he's picked up have been vacant/paper straps.
"Small" middleweights do not come to the ring at 170 pounds. Martinez does! That's the same as Abraham, Taylor, Miranda, Pavlik, and others who were all referred to as "HUGE" middleweights!
Cotto has a very good resume, and he beat foreman for the 154 wba belt. His resume as it is now is already hof worthy, especially if he avenges his loss vs margarito this year. If he can add number 2 p4p 160 lineal champion martinez to his resume thats pretty damn good, then again im talking about it like its very likely when it obviously isnt so I will leave it at that. I just hope cotto finishes his career strongly.
mundine, ishida, wolak are ranked 1,2,3 by the wba. Ring magazine has angulo at 2, canelo at 3. dzinziruk,canelo,k9 are the other beltholders. I think cotto is better off trying to unify or look for the ring title at 154 but if he wants to fight at 160 he can try martinez or fight chavez, I think he loses both fights but still he has plenty of good options.
No, not 100% sure but chavez is 6ft tall, weighs around 180 or something on fight night and cotto is a small guy at 154 already, also chavez throws a lot of punches. Therefore I think he could beat cotto. On the other hand I could see cotto land a left hook and beat him up easily since he is more skilled. But if I had to put money on it it would be on chavez because frankly cotto is to small to compete at 160, size matters.
I can't see how cotto can be considered an atg even though he hasn't ever been no1 p4p in his era, or top 3 for that matter. beating martinez would pop him in top 3 though.
I like Cotto too much as a fighter and a person to want to see him get the sh*t kicked out of him by Martinez.
