    FREDDIE ROACH:
    about Joe Louis :

"... if you wanted to go by the book, he was the perfect fighter."

    http://www.doghouseboxing.com/DHB/Tyler081309.htm

"Who is your favorite fighter of all time other then Manny?
Freddie Roach: Joe Louis hands down - his technique, he's a textbook fighter. If you want to learn boxing by the book he's the guy to watch. A complete well schooled fighter. Not just natural ability but well schooled."

    EDDIE FUTCH:
    about Robinson :
    “He had everything,”
“Boxing skills, punching power, a great chin, mental strength. There was nothing he couldn’t do. He knew almost everything there was to know about how to box. When Ray was in his prime, he owned the ring like no fighter before or since.”

Skills=/=overall effectiveness, ability, pound for pound worth.

Louis had superior defensive ability along with his offensive arsenal, although SRR's combination of good boxing skill and unbelievable firepower made him the superior fighter.

I think robinson could solve more diversity in styles. As an example, I have trouble envisioning very many fighters to out-bang either, but as far as boxers with good movement, I think Robinson dealt with that better.

In short, Louis was easier to outbox than Robinson, but both dealt with come-foreward fighters well...

Louis was undoubtedly the most skilled heavyweight of all time, but as Eddie Futch said "Robinson owned the ring like no fighter before or after him".

    BTW nice OP.

Robinson and it isn't close, can you imagine SRR being outboxed by a man he had 40lbs on?

    Galivan for 1

If he had such better defensive skill why did he get knocked down so many times comparatively? Why was he ko'd? Why was he outboxed multiple times?

I think Louis was a better technician, despite Robby having more all-around talent.

For example, look at the inside skill and counterpunching ability she shows here, against a guy who was 50 pounds heavier and all over him:

    That wasn't the question, though.

You mean if Robby was also 37, if at least half of that 40 pound "advantage" was just excess weight, and if the lighter fighter was himself an ATG at his peak? Sure, why not.

Gavilan wasn't a "mover/boxer" at the time he fought Robby, he was an aggressive inside swarmer.

It wasn't until a year or so later that he altered his style to become more of a boxer.

 Robinson was knocked down even more times than Louis.

 What "multiple times" was he outboxed?

Based on film i'd say these two are the most perfect fighting machines in history.

Robinson slightly edges it due his superior athleticism allowing him to be more effective.
