Tyson is the youngest man to beat a recognised heavyweight champion, but patterson is the youngest ever actual recognised heavyweight champion.

At the time tyson beat berbick spinks held the legitimate championship (altho spinks shouldn't have been because holmes clearly beat him in the rematch)

Dont wanna get shot down for askin this but why was spinks the legitimate champion when he only held the ibf version and mike won the wbc first?

 

I tend to put Patterson and Tyson in entirely separate categories. Tyson was the youngest to ever be called a heavyweight champion. Patterson was the youngest to ever be the undisputed heavyweight champion, but it's a lot easier to do when you only have to win one belt to be undisputed. Tyson was the youngest to unify the HW championship.

Patterson was the youngest to win the "lineal" title, but the ironic thing is that the "lineal title" Patterson won was vacant. A title being vacated or stripped should automatically break lineage since it's the sanctioning bodies who choose replacement contenders -the same sanctoning bodies we gleefully ignore when only honoring "lineage" instead of the actual physical championships that are awarded.

In short, I'm perfectly fine with calling Tyson the youngest ever heavyweight champion.

Oh, and to answer the OP's question - I doubt anybody will ever beat the record. Tyson was in a unique position in that his style was so pro-oriented that he couldn't even qualify for the Olympics but was already ready to take the pro ranks by storm. Those are difficult conditions to reproduce, but necessary if you want a teen competing in the pros.

 

A growing contigent of people have chosen to disregard sanctioning bodies outright and follow a mythical "lineal" championship where they basically trace the path of contender beating champion from the very beginning of boxing. According to that logic, Holmes was the lineal champion, even though Smith and Berbick also had claims to the title of heavyweight champion. So by beating Holmes, Spinks became the lineal champion, and nobody else counts.

 

Sure mate. The reason is that larry was considered by everyone the legitimate champion, his lineage began after beating ali. But spinks was the man who ended holmes run. The wbc would have been with jinx as well as ibf and ring. It was only the wba holmes never contested.

So linearly speaking spinks was the real champ. In reality spinks got a gift in the rematch and tyson was the premiere heavyweight from 86 onwards. So I don't mind the label too much.

 

Thank you! I thought I was the only one here who actually recognizes that Spinks was still the champion. Mike Tyson, who was my childhood hero was the second youngest World Heavyweight Champion in history. Mike Tyson is one of only two men to win the REAL heavyweight title by first round KO. Sonny Liston was the other.

Yeah even though I think spinks got a gift against holmes, he got the official decision and was the man to beat to claim the true championship.

I think occasionally a championship's lineage can be usurped (tyson in 96 rendered foreman's lineage claim meaningless for example) but on this particular occasion it has to be appreciated that spinks was the man to beat even if he wasn't globally recognised as the best heavyweight in the world.

 

I bet Archie to win vs the Rock...and Patterson to beat my man Archie....in that Patterson was then so dammed fast.
Stayed a Patterson fan all the way through Ali 2.

And it was the two top contenders and for the Heavyweight championship....So Patterson was the youngest undisputed Champion then....in that as far as I know those not beaten by Archie were beaten by Patterson who were lower in the single line of contenders.

Tyson was just a belt holder.....I really don't know if one was a month or two younger when Undisputed Champ....

Both had the same trainer.
